Howdy to all!I am trying to restore a couple of Compaq SLT286 "Laptops" and have run into a problem with their power bricks. The brick will flash a Green lite when plugged into the wall socket and then....Nothing seems to go to the Laptop.I have two of them that do the same thing. Are they both bad?
I tried a third brick from a functional SLT386\20 and that one did boot the 286,but the version is slightly different(same voltage tho).
Thanks in advance!

It could be that if the nicad pack is bad/missing then the slt doesn't power.
I may be totally wrong, as it's about 3 years since I got mine going, but I'm pretty sure that power goes into one of the (4) springs on the nicad pack, through a thermal fuse then out again.
Apologies if I've got this mixed up with another machine.

Try putting a piece of tape over the battery contacts. It's a while ago now so the memory is a little hazy but I think I had the same problem with mine.

When I first got it I noticed someone had done this. I removed the tape and suddenly the machine wouldn't go. I reapplied the tape and it went?

Don't ask me why, but it seemed to work.

The battery is knackered of course. It was almost like in trying to charge it, not enough current was there to start the machine as well.

It would be nice to have a sharp memory, mine was always a little hazy. just to say "cute machine - working or not" Mine was a kerbside find.

Thanks to all for the help!

Isn't the SLT series one of those that has to have at least some power to the battery before the computer will power up?

Seems like I had one of those a while back and I had to let mine charge up for at least a couple of hours.

Removing the battery allowed the SLT to boot.I noticed the brick showing a flashing green light and not the gold "Charging" light when I plugged it in.When I removed the battery the green light went "Solid" and it booted.

Yep, that's how mine behaves. You can still use the dead battery to fill up the battery cavity by simply putting some cellotape on the battery contacts.
