Cool vintage electronics projects to do in 2023

I'm sorry, no, you have zero right to throw out the word "snowflake" here. If you just quietly reached into your pocket and flipped it on without telling anyone *that* is being a snowflake, IE, the definition of someone who refuses to openly stand up for their beliefs and confront opposition to them.

And yes, it is "dangerous". I've carried a pager before. The only thing that would be lost if I didn't answer it would have been, I dunno, a few million dollars, not lives, but there are reasons the laws are written as they are. Here's the FCC's page on it, go ahead and look up the cited laws. Even local law enforcement aren't allowed to use jammers, and they have a hell of a lot more potential justifications than a quiet boat ride.
Its the thinking im talking about.. SNowflake thinking.

I think you replied to my statement before my edit where I talk about confronting people.. so ill let that one go.

Maybe the police should use jammers.. Maybe businesses should too. In fact I KNOW THEY SHOULD. They can post a placard stating so at the entrance.. Laws mind you, ALL OF THEM.. Are arbitrary. They were made by men.. And they change. Just because its law now doesnt mean that wont change. You dont need a law to tell you not to harm or murder someone, that should be part of someones concience.

Cable descramblers were illegal.. So what. I used them. I get free sirius satelite radio too.

People need to be controlled.. Thats really what laws are.. control. The entitlement has gotten way out of hand. PEople need to be controlled with thier stupid phones.. They are using them and looking at the screen while driving 70+MPH.. THAT AFFECTS THE REST OF US. They are stopping other people from carrying on one and one conversations because they are obnoxiously yelling into a phone with a non important call.

YOU WILL NEVER SEE ME ANSWER MY PHONE IN PUBLIC. I excuse myself and carry on a quiet conversation where noone can hear me. ALWAYS.

And honestly if you are on a 2 hour boat ride and waiting to find out if its a boy or girl, or if mom is gonna survive surgery.. well you put yourself in a situation of high likelihood of no communication. So again, you cant go thinking "what if" on everything... ITs pointless.

Listen I get your point. I do. I just dont agree with the WHAT IF scenario. I mentioned in a previous thread I dont go to the movies anymore. I used to love them. Do you know why I dont go anymore? PEOPLE ON THEIR PHONES EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Until people are moderated... too bad.

You have to understand Im not entitled. I go through life every day and work hard to do things that will not affect other people adversely. I use my turn signal religiously... at 1am in an empty parking lot.. because its the proper way to operate a vehicle. I dont use my phone in public as to not bother anyone. I dont leave my brights on at night if I see the halo of oncoming cars. I dont leave my shopping cart diagnally blocking the aisle as I walk away to get something. I put it off to the side.. every time. I think about stupid little things like this.. Incessantly.. I try really really hard to not bother people or get in thier way.. Because I want the same treatment in return. If you live your life not caring about everyone else around you... well screw those people....

I don't even understand what you think the definition of "Snowflake" is. Pointing out that a thing might have consequences beyond the immediate knowledge or cares of the person doing that thing is not "being a snowflake". I mean... I'm sorry, WTF? We're not talking about a risk of someone getting their feelings hurt because they overhear a scary idea; cell phone networks are public infrastructure that, yes, carry a lot of stupid and pointless conversations and garbage web traffic, but they also carry vital personal, business, and governmental communication. Are the chances pretty low that someone's going to get a panicked call from the neighbors telling them that their child was just carried off in an ambulance right in the middle of your juvenile jammer power play? Sure. But are they zero? No. What give you the right to single-handedly make this decision? Is it your restaurant or boat? What if the venue uses cellular communications to swipe credit cards or process ticket orders? You just fucked it all up because you didn't want to tell the manager to please tell an idiot to shut up.

Seriously, this is cowardly horseshit and you know it.

If I were looking around for something not-too-challenging to investigate, I'd want to look to the more obscure semiconductors, such as UJTs and tunnel diodes. Or nearly-forgotten devices.

One of my current projects is following instructions in an old issue of Computers & Electronics to adapt a Speak and Spell to work with a ZX81/TS1000. I even spent a bit of time in the wood shop and made a stand for it.

If you wanted to really waste some time, you could interface the speak-n-spell to a TDD deaf teletype and make some prank phone calls.

Build a 5w practice amp for guitar, but use a VFD salvaged from a VCR or clock radio instead of a vacuum tube for the pre-amp stage. I haven't tried it but have read Korg's "nu-tube" is essentially a VFD
