Creating a ProDOS 6 Disk

I am using a Windows XP system to download the ProDOS disk image files from Apple's archive. I believe that I should be able to use CiderPress to take those files and write them to a 3.5" disk. Yes, when I run CiderPress and use File|Open to try to open one of the .sea files downloaded from Apple's web site, I get the message that "File doesn't appear to be a valid archive or disk image." I am quite stymied! I am under the impression that CiderPress was made for this sort of application - to be able to download old Apple II files and write them to Apple-readable disks on a PC. Am I way off base?

I imagine CiderPress doesn't know what to do with a .SEA (StuffIt Expander Archive) file.
The disk image you need is probably inside. To extract it, you'll need a utility that speaks StuffIt format.

Ahm is right, it probably can`t open a .sea file. It might just have gotten corrupted too, so finding another copy of the image might fix the problem. Ignore the rest if you found another image that works...

First-off, what sort of 3.5" drive do you have on your Apple II? Is it just an 800K drive, or is it a High-Density (Superdrive, FDHD, 1.44MB, etc)?

If it`s an 800K drive, main problem here is that a PC can`t write to a ProDOS (I assume version 8?) disk because the disks used by ProDOS are recorded using a different method (GCR vs. MFM) that a Standard PC floppy controller cannot use/read.

Ciderpress`s page is a little confusing in that it says you can write 720KB/1440KB disks. The problem is that you need 800KB (not 720KB) Apple-formatted disks, which can't be read/Written to in a standard PC.

Now, do you have access to an older (Macintosh SE, IIsi, etc) Mac? You can use it, if you have one, to get disks to your Apple. ADTpro is another option, though I`ve only used it with a 5.25" drive...

Actually an .sea is Self Extracting Archive. If it were just a regular Stuffit archive the suffix would be .sit. There are other places on the web were you can download the System 6 software for the GS, if that's what he's after. Here's an excellent site:

The link is to the page with the different versions of the GS System software. I'm certain that Ciderpress can handle the disk images that can be downloaded from there.

If it's actually Prodos you're after the better bet would be to go to Asimov ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/images/disk_utils/copy_ii/ and download CopyllPlus.v9.1.SDK which is a 3.5 disk image of version 9.1 of Copy II+. Use CiderPress to transfer that to a 3.5 disk images and you'll have Prodos 1.9, I believe, along with a useful program.
