Dell 316lt

A recycler I frequent has a DELL 316LT luggable laptop but without a power supply. Is this the first DELL laptop model? Anybody have one of these, if so how is it (386sx I think).

Just wondering how good the screen is and how hard it is to find a PS for the unit.
 
In that case you're in luck because you can likely buy a generic replacement at Radioshack. Will likely cost $20-40 though, due to the odd and high requirements for such a device. You'll need exact power specifications though.

This bothers me because in my experience it's the square-like jack that ends up being unreliable, and the round one that has a bit more longevity to it (but is also unreliable, so in my system that has it I coated the entire area inside with hot glue to hold it in place firmly forever).

They're advocating using the part that I believe to be less reliable...and they're a repair shop...hmm...

Well, Dell is known for oddball power connectors. Perhaps it's possible to replace the one on the 316LT with a plain old coaxial power connector. At least power supplies with that configuration are abundant. Does the 316LT connector look anything like the one on the Latitude XPi? Another weird one...
 
If you can find a pinout a coax->whatever adapter might be the best choice - preserve the original jack and compatibility with those PSUs if you find one, and still be able to use it.. :p

Good idea, but as it happens i do have the adapters for those LTs.
 
Well I picked it up today. bad news is only 2 of about 6 case screws were in it, opened it up and the back plastic holding the keyboard guts in are gone along with a power management board. The rest seems intact (motherboard, power section, RAM, floppy, HD, LCD etc). The case cleaned up very nicely, so I guess I need to find a donor machine to complete this unit. There is a FPU installed, which is cool.
