Dodge D-5 rebuild

A few weeks months ago, the motor in my Dodge D-5 got seized (incorrect spelling) while driving down the road. The bering in the crank shaft is gone on it, and it needs to be replaced, so..... Last week i started working on it, i took of the rear box, took out the radiator, air intake, and other small components. Now i have to get the engine and trans out before i can do any thing else. I've been thinking that if i can't get the little misubishi 4 banger in it fixed, i can attempt to put a chevy 350 in it, and ( sort of ) turn it into a large go cart/ dune buggy! In our place we have about three of them, two of which work. If i did somehow get it to work there would be one problem. The transmition would probly not be adaptible, and if it were, there would be to much power from the motor, and the tans would end up being wrecked.

Please tell me what you think about this project of mine!

It's easier to adapt a drive shaft (propeller shaft, to you Cannucks) to a Chebby trans than to bring together a dis-similar engine/bell housing combo.

A very popular conversion is putting a Chevy 350 in a Chevy S-10 pickup. It would be rather cool to put a Cummins diesel or a V-10 in your D-5, but the weight would probably have your truck sitting on its nose.

The fabrication would trip me up on those engine conversions. Motor mounts, bigger radiator, etc. is past my abilities. Repair work, though, I can do. Haven't had to put a vehicle in a shop in quite a long time (knocks wood).

I think that for my short drive to work every day an electric car would be great, and a Corolla a nearly ideal candidate, but the cost (if done right) would be outrageous.

get a small block Dodge 360 engine along with the transmission attached to it and go to town . Dont degrade your Dodge by putting a GASP chevy engine in it. If u can find something fron 89 to 94 you will have an 4 speed automatic with overdrive. should be lots of them in late Dodge trucks sitting in salvage yards. Enjoy

I remember that we do have a Dodge 360, but its in a working truck that i am selling for $200 to a friend. I am putting the money towards my truck. If i don't manage to fix the curent motor, i will most likely put the money to a new (well old) D-5 motor.

By the way Terry, where did you get propeller shaft from? Everyone out here in alberta uses drive shaft. Mabey your thinking about the newfey's.

I heard it in a boneyard in Thunder Bay back in '79, when we had to pick up a replacement shaft for a '76 Monza (after hitch-hiking 276 miles from Manitowaj Corners). Not quite Newfoundland, but still pretty much in the boondocks.
