Getting a Motorola Meteor to work on a cell network

Hey everyone,

I had an idea to get my Motorola bag phone on a modern cell network or something like that. I'd like to keep as much as possible, and I'd like to see if it could be contained within the bag. Would this be possible since the AMPS network was shut down in 2008?

Note: This is probably what I'll use for a power supply: http://tinyurl.com/4b87uybc

There are a few solutions now available that emulate an AMPS tower. Some are more advanced and can go as far as VoIP routing and bridging to a traditional POTS link so you can use it as a range-limited cordless phone, others have been proofs of concept.

Two problems:
1- Most of these solutions use free software, a raspi and a $500 to $1000 Software-Defined Radio, so the critical part is extremely expensive.
2- the AMPS band was repacked for other digital and leased commercial bands after it was shutdown because the Radio Spectrum is a limited range and even small slices of it are expensive. Don't be caught trying to operate your setup somewhere where it will interfere with the reallocated bands. Most people limit the range to about 50 feet, or the average size of a residential property.
