Getting XT-CF-Lite/XT-IDE working

From that picture I wouldn't be surprised if you've got a short between pins on the CF socket.

I insert the card into the middle ISA slot with no CF card and I no longer get the beeps, nor does it do anything else, but it is not shorting as the fan is still going.
If the fan in the PSU is AC powered, rather than DC, then the fan is still going to turn. Is the +5V present ?

I agree. And if the poor socket-pin-to-solder-pad alignment is not the problem cause, it may be a problem down the track.

Uhmm, well I thought I had done quite well with the soldering, perhaps the camera wasn't showing the pads clearly so I took some magnifier/microscope pictures. Perhaps those with better eyes than I now have can see an issue. I did resolder the left most pin25 and clearly not a great job, but it is nc and not shorted. I have checked for shorts, not easy and can't find any. About to go and check the 5v and get the scope out. Thanks for showing interest, it's really appreciated. Oh and the fan is dc.

YAY!!!! It's working. Calloo callay, oh frabjous day... ;)

I have no idea what I did. I had finished checking every continuity and the not continuity checks and went to check the 5v rail and suddenly I got my beeps and XTIDE menu up.

Sadly the CF card I had prepared wouldn't boot, but I sort of expected that as it was just a test (or does it take much longer than I gave it to boot? I doubt that.) So now to prepare a bootable CF card (without a boot diskette!!!)

Thanks for the assistance. No doubt - I'll be back :)

With the camera at this angle the soldering and alignment looks good.
