Help with getting dos on a cf card with a modern pc

I think that there is a major point missing somewhere. Probably in my head.

I cannot create a 720k bootable dos6.x diskette. If I could I can install to CF card. I have done this with Dos3.3 and even Dos5, but no 720k win6,x images, ISOs or anything

I have a usb floppy, but it can't be accessed from my dos machine, because dos doesn't support usb. There is a usbaspi.sys driver, but I can't get it to work.

I tried the F7 option to try and create a floppy, but dos doesn't support usb... so it fails

I cannot get dos6.x onto the CF card using anything, rufus, rawrite, dd (win version) win32diskimager, balenaetcher and many others. Why, because they either don't write to CF card and/or I don't have an image to write.

What I need is dos6.x on 720k disk image. Anyone know how to do that?

Or a way of getting dos6.xx onto a cf card that is bootable.

I think I'm either misunderstanding some suggestions or don't even understand, especially the stuff about the cf card drive geometry and XUB??? I have a working XUB on my isa card that can read my CF cards and boot from them (win3, win5) which I created using the attached 3.5 inch real diskette drive connected to my 5150.

I guess I should just call it quits and get to love dos 5.

Thanks, though to all the suggestions.

Yeah I have that approach too via a Pentium box with standard CF to IDE passive adapter. In the Pentium, it would boot, even with XTCF used instead of passive adapter, but no go on XT, unless XUB has been reconfigured.
I have the same setup in a couple of my pentiums
I gather you have configured your XUB correctly, once I did that with mine, I can boot those cards made on Pentium on XT. So step one for anyone with problems is xtidecfg and flash.
Yes though it depends on what computer i use to make the bootable CF
By the way I prefer the virtual approach because I don't have enough space to keep my machines around, they're stored when not used.
That's the beauty of a Thin Client it takes up very little space and is very handy but i know what you mean i'm falling over my gear again.

I thought you said you installed DOS 6.22 on your laptop using your USB floppy

So you have DOS 5 installed and working on your 5150, Yes?
Do you have a spare CF card ?

I've used Rufus with more than a few dozen CF's. I'll have to look at the smallest size I've done, but I've done a stack of 2GB CF's. Older versions of Rufus would load MS DOS or FreeDOS, the latest version is now asking for a bin file. for MS DOS. One trick I've used with Rufus is to load FreeDOS into a partition that MS DOS can use and then I've used a stack of 3.5" MS DOS disks to load MS DOS onto the CF. This solved the problem of BIOS seeing the CF as a removable device and therefore non-boot. That won't solve your need for drive that loads a 720K diskette with DOS. Sorry that I've not attempted what you are trying to do.

I did and there's the gotcha. You can copy to c and from c, but as soon as you remove the diskette then dos can't see it [the drive] anymore.

Yes I have dos 5 and many spare cf cards. This was because I had some real Del dos 5 install discs- 720k, miracle

You could download DOS 6.22 UPGRADE floppy images using your Win 10 computer, EXTRACT the contents of those images into 1 folder, Say "622UPG"

Grab another CF and put it in your 5150, Install DOS 5 and test to make sure all is working, Boots etc.
Remove the CF from the 5150 and plug it into your Win 10 computer, Copy the "622UPG" folder and all contents to the CF.

Remove the CF from your Win 10 computer and put it in 5150 and boot up, And run SETUP from within the "622UPG" folder

Hi all. My dell xps-15 finally died, refused to boot properly and after heroic efforts including trying to reflow any cracked/broken solder joints on the graphics card (see Youtube) I couldn't get it to start up. It was quite funny to see my non-working xps-15 in bits next to a working IBM 5150 PC!!! There's a word for that?

So I bought a new HP Pavilion 5. .Upgraded to 1TB disk and 32GB ram using parts from the xps-15 and then upgrade to Windows Pro from Home. What a nightmare that proved to be. Had to add a couple of extra files to the USB install and even then it didn't seem to recognise the product key. And I had to plug into a wired connection as it wouldn't activate wi-fi without a driver (Remember when we had to add a drivers to a diskette, was it win3.1?)

Anyway the purpose of this boring preamble is that I managed to get hold of a dos6.22 image that was created for 720k diskette. Please don't ask where as I am not at liberty to say. But I managed to boot the diskette, fdisk the CF card, but struggled to format the CF card with the /s option. Insufficient memory. I only have 256kB Thought I was stuffed. For some reason I didn't simply try just format, but instantly went to a dos5 diskette and used that to format the CF card. (I will try doing format from the 6.22 diskette later on today.) Then I put sys.exe from another dos 1.44 diskette onto my 720k diskette and managed to transfer the system to the CF card. That wouldn't boot, so I did fdisk /mbr from the 6.22 diskette and that worked. Then I managed to boot the CF card and it's at version 6.22

Now I have to expand lots of DOS files and then I can have a go at upgrading XUB (trepidation!!!)

Just like to say a big thankyou to all you wonderful people for helping me through this journey. I am sort of wondering what I'm going to do with this thing now :ROFLMAO:

So I had another go with my dos6.22 720k diskette. It booted and it would format the CF card, it would also sys c: and fdisk /mbr

Interestingly I though I'd use a 256k industrial card that I bought. This wouldn't boot (need to upgrade XUB? - on it!).

It worked fine on a 1GB card I also had.

Spent ages getting all 6.22 files on to the CF card.

Then I tried edit autoexec.bat and bam - not enough memory!!!! (on 256k 5150)

Now I need to find a version of edlin or another low memory editor for 6.22 - any ideas?

I've not had so much rejection since I tried dating girls when I was 14 ;)

Maybe this can help.

EDIT: Oh wait, you also need the help file.
