Hello again all,

I am in the middle of acquiring an HP-86B and an HP-9121D floppy disk drive unit.

I hope to one day also acquire the HP-89200A Auxiliary Processor and get CP/M running, but, that will e a bit later, after I get the basic system up and running with reliable floppy disk operation.

So, I see in the 9121D/S Disc Memory Operator's Manual that one is supposed to "slide the disc guard away from the head window exposing the disc surface." I have not encountered 3.5 inch floppy discs that have a manually operated disk guard...

I also see in HP's 3 1/2 Inch Flexible Disc Drive Service Information that "Some of the drives feature the "Auto Shutter" which automatically opens and closes the guard as the disc is inserted and removed from the drive."

So, do I have to wait until I actually receive my unit to find out which sort of unit I have, or could it be determined from the serial number? The serial number shown on the unit that I purchased is 2341Y16739.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice to offer?

Thanks, in advance, for your patience and attention.

I hace EXACLY ONE of those early HP 3.5 inch disks, the shutter is shaped a little differently and you pinch the corner to release the shutter after you push it out, kinda spiffy if you ask me, i've also got 11 SSDD 3.5inch disks too. From what i read, you are going to either get one or the other, if its the "Auto Shutter" Your good, as in theory it should use standard disks. If not, your gonna need some of those manual shutter disks.

If the drive could be opened up easily, I would check to see if it has the auto shutter pin up in the front.

While I wouldn't like to do it, stripping the shutter off the floppy should make sure it works with the manual shutter expecting drive. Folding some form of envelope for the now shutterless disks would help longevity.

An HP 9192D? I can't find any reference to that model. Are you sure it isn't a 9122D?

Woah! Thank you so much for pointing this out. I have so many typos in my original post it is quite embarrassing.

I am in the middle of acquiring an HP-9121D. There. I now have that down right. It's a dual 3.5 inch disk drive unit.

Many apologies for all the confusion!
