  • From now on we will require that a prefix is set for any items in the sales area. We have created regions and locations for this. We also require that you select a delivery option before posting your listing. This will hopefully help us streamline the things that get listed for sales here and help local people better advertise their items, especially for local only sales. New sales rules are also coming, so stay tuned.

Mid Atlantic IBM 3278 with keyboard

Covers: New York, Pensylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC.
Agreed, if the OP is amenable. One of our people should have no trouble picking it up.

Dave,

A Question: who assigns the value of the donation? Is it LSSM or would the person donating be responsible for researching value and creating the paperwork to support the value? Asking out of curiosity more then in regards to this particular case. Thanks.

The receiving entity does not assign value; that's the donor's responsibility. We issue a letter detailing what was received and asserting that we provided nothing in return, i.e. it was a pure donation. The donor then assigns a value and gives that, and our letter as supporting documentation, to their tax preparer.

This is (verbosely) detailed here: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p561

That's too bad but can't say I am surprised. I did do a quick search for "IBM 3278" and saw how the OP came up with the value of $5K for just the KB. There is an unsold one offered for that price from Croatia. LOL. Best of luck to him/her.

Yeah. But it will sell. The terminal will go into the trash and the keyboard will sit in some parent's basement for video games. That's what has happened to pretty much all of these.

I may take some heat for this comment but what the hell. I see this as a "drive by" seller, a profiteer, who has no respect for the vintage computer community and only wants to make a sale. I have commented on this type of thing before and I don't think we should allow this type of post in our community. Of course, I don't decide these things and it's not really my place. And maybe I'll get disciplined by the admin.

At the very least, lay out your cards! What price do you want? And then be prepared to defend your ask. We are enthusiests and preservationists and hobbiests, etc. This is not primarily a clearing house for profiteers!

The OP should have donated it. That would have been honerable if they are going to come here. If not, then do your thing on E-bay and leave it at that.

Ok, I'm done now. Let me have it!

I agree. It is unfortunate but expected from the get go when the OP posted about how he knows his worth and did not want to haggle. Well eBay is full of scammers so hopefully the two will find each other!

Nothing you said is out of line or not acceptable by the majority of the users on this board. I will say I am seeing more and more new members with their only posts being pricing requests and/or determining interest. Which is why when I respond I, politely, make it clear that we all know they are full of shit and that I at least am not interested in helping them maximize their profit at the expense of the community. Others have advocated it, and I agree completely, that there should be limits on who can post on for sale and market place type subforums. Nothing draconian but maybe a one to three month wait period and/or a certain number of meaningful posts in the other subs before you can start posting on this forum

Agreed on all points, but in the OP's defense, he did indicate a willingness to donate it to the museum if it fails to sell on eBay, so I don't think he's just another "wurfer".
That said, though, there's essentially zero chance that it won't sell.

I can’t tell you how many 3278s I’ve seen for sale without keyboards. Which of course makes them useless. Since all of my 3278s have the data entry keyboard (which is probably why they weren’t scavenged), I’ve been considering building replica keyboards for them. Since there’s a nice keyboard layout editor online, the only issue is creating the custom key tops.

I agree with you to some extent, but on the other hand, I can imagine some people replying "what, so some billionaire can sell it and profit instead?" after what happened to the LCM. Obviously a volunteer-run organisation like LSSM isn't in the same situation, but I imagine that the LCM could have discouraged donations a bit.

This is apparently a solution for using PS/2 keyboards to save old 3278s and similar: https://github.com/inmbolmie/Save-a-Term Haven't used it myself, but am a happy customer of one of his other projects!

Yes, LSSM is a very different kind of organization, but the LCM situation has damaged things for all of us.
