IBM L40SX harddrive problem

I have a IBM L40SX laptop, this one came with a Conner CP2067 60MB harddrive in it.
The harddrive wasn't working anymore so I replaced it with a 10GB IBM drive but I wanted to make it original again.
Got myself a refurbished CP2067 harddrive, but this one spinned up, but after that it started clicking. Got it replaced for another tested and working CP2067, but got the same problem. Put back the 10GB and got it working again.
Somehow this L40SX has problems with older IDE drives, although they come fitted with one inside.
I looks like it doesn't get enough power to spin up normal like it should, maybe the older drives need more power to spin up.
Anyone out there has any idea what could be wrong??
And yes, I used the reference disk to reconfigure, but the drives are not recognized.

Have you tried the Conners in another system?

No, I have not, I don't have another system to try a 2.5 ide drive. I have a normal pc, but can't connect this drive.
The shop where I bought the second drive has tested it before shipping it to me, so I assume it should be working, but I know testing is the only way to make sure it works.

You can test laptop drives in any system by using something like this
I have a couple of these, they are very handy for putting laptop drives into standard desktop computers and for troubleshooting.
Just make sure you don't connect the laptop drive the other way around (check and doublecheck for pin 1 first!)

Tried the drives using a 2.5 > 3.5 adapter in my computer, they both didn't work, found another 2.5 drive I could use in my desktop pc, plugged it into the L40SX and is working, it has a lot of bad sectors, but at least it is recognized, so it looks like my L40SX is ok.
