I went to a local tag sale and recently found an old IBM Quietwriter, Model
2 printer for sale. I purchased it for $10.00.

I would like to hook it up to my IBM-PC AT. Does any body have an operations
manual or information for this printer. IBM does not have anything on their
website. I would like to know the following:

1) Printer Ribbon part number
2) Paper used- thermal or regular
3) How to put paper in carriage.

If anyone has a manual, can a copy be made or I would certainly purchase
it.

Thanks,
Fred

it's normal paper

the ribbons have to be for the 5201 & the heads are also "consumables"

to insert paper bring the bail bar forward a bit more than you think you ought to, & the platen rotates by the right amount to feed a sheet.

That's all the info I can give for now except to say that they were expensive to run in the '80s, but gave a print of "almost" laser quality, make of that what you will!;)

My sparse notes from the time:

IBM QUIETWRITER II (MODEL 5201)

The part numbers and serial numbers of Quietwriter printers are found inside the printer stamped into a plate in the bottom.

There appear to be two sub models of the Quietwriter II. Some Quietwriter II's have a nameplates with '5201-002' on them and others have nameplates with 'model 2'. Both versions support graphics.

Quietwriter II printers have no inbuilt fonts (refer to page 3-16 of the 'Guide To Operations'). Fonts are provided by the way of font cartridges which plug into holders within the printer.

Quietwriter printers can be used to print on overhead transparencies.

For general faults, one of the front panel status lamps will be on solid and the printer will beep three times (refer to page 4-2 of the 'Quietwriter II - Guide To Operations' book).

For the more complex faults, one or more of the status lamps will be flashing and the printer will beep six times. When this occurs, the STOP button is pressed to reveal the second part of the error code. Using the error code and the 'Hardware Maintenance Service' manual, you should be able to isolate the fault down to LRU level. (refer to page 3-1200-1 of the 'Hardware Maintenance Service' manual).

A cut-sheet paper feeder is available for the Quietwriter II. It's part number is 6373120.
