First time turned on in years and years.

I have not changed the battery so I dont know if that helps or not .

On switch on I get hard drive sounds and the what I think is the ram testing going up to end saying

00512 KB ok

080000 0000 201 - Memory Error
- Parity Check 1
303 - Keyboard or system unit error
161 - System Options Not Set (run Setup)
601 - Diskette Error

(Resume = "F1" Key)

for a while it did nothing when I pressed any key but now it just beeps when I press any key but doesnt do anything else.

I did once get the same above just without the 601 but still didnt work with the keyboard.

Any help would be great.

So multiple issues are not to be unexpected.

00512 KB ok

080000 0000 201 - Memory Error
- Parity Check 1
"080000" = Motherboard RAM error at address 512 KB.
"0000" = Usually an indicator that the parity bit is at fault.
"Parity Check 1" = Strongly reinforces the "0000".

The 5162 has 640 KB on the motherboard, per the diagram at [here]. In that diagram, the DIP (dual in line package) chips (blue in the diagram) are proving RAM between addresses 512 KB and 640 KB.
A parity check at 512 KB sounds like either:
- One of the DIL chips (most like one of the two storing the parity bit) is faulty.
- One of the DIL chips (most like one of the two storing the parity bit) has developed a poor connection with its IC socket.

So the first thing to do is re-seat the DIL chips. Per the diagram at [here], chips U1 and U4 are the likely culprits, but re-seat them all.

I have not changed the battery so I dont know if that helps or not .
161 - System Options Not Set (run Setup)
A 161 error is a 'bad battery' error.

Check the battery voltage. See [here]. After changing the battery, you will need to run the SETUP procedure in order to clear the 161 error, but it sounds like a keyboard related issue may, for now, stop you from doing that.

601 - Diskette Error
I did once get the same above just without the 601 ...
This might be due to a poor connection between the floppy controller and the ISA slot it is plugged into. So the first thing to try is to re-seat the card in its slot a few times.

It might be the floppy drive. During the power-on-self test, are you observing (seeing and hearing) the A: drive being accessed ?

303 - Keyboard or system unit error
for a while it did nothing when I pressed any key but now it just beeps when I press any key but doesnt do anything else.
A 303 error on an IBM 5162 is sure to be same as a 303 error on an IBM 5170.
See the 303 error description at [here].
Per that, do you still see the 303 when you power on the 5162 with the keyboard not attached ?

Firstly, Thanks for getting back to me and also the amount of detail provided.

I have replaced the battery but as you said above without any change to the keyboard the error message still comes up. I cant be 100% sure that the keyboards (I have two of them) but the message still comes up if no keyboard is put in - not sure if that is normal or not.

I have reseated all of the chips to the side of the memory, removed the memory and put it back in. With no change in error messages.

I have removed all cards that are not needed (all but the video card / I have also swapped out the video card with no change. With everything removed I have checked over the board and cant seen any chips that might have caused issues and have also checked the PSU to see if it was a power issue not fully powering the whole board but still no luck.

mid post update. I am now only getting an

000000 4000 201 message. just saying that and not doing anything else at all.

Abnormal. Without a keyboard, 301 is the only 300 series error that is expected. So this means that there is a keyboard related problem on the motherboard. Do you have a logic probe? Do you have the ability to solder in replacement chips?

RAM error: bit 14 at address 000000.

That corresponds to the SIMM designated S2. It was working at post #1. I suggest that you remove+refit S2 a few times, maybe blowing air into the SIMM socket in case a hair, or something else, is in the socket.
