I'm looking for memory expansion options for my Tandy 1000 TL. I have all these XT Memory cards that have banks full of SRAM and I have no idea what I can use them for. Only one small one will fit in the 1000 TL I have, and it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

One of these is an Everex EV-138. I've heard this card is a relative of the EV-159, but there's nothing about drivers and very little information on this card. Most EMS Cards are too large to fit in the Tandy's case.

Here's a quote from the Wiki:
The Tandy 1000 TL and TL/2 use 8 MHz Intel 80286 processors, whereas the TL/3 uses a 10 MHz 80286. These computers had 640 kilobytes of memory preinstalled, with an option for an extra 128 kilobytes to be installed for use as video memory for the onboard ETGA (Enhanced TGA, the "Enhanced" referring to the added 640x200x16 color mode) video hardware. It is therefore impractical to expand the onboard memory beyond 640 KB if a VGA graphics card is installed. Notably, the TL/3 had a high-density floppy controller for the first time, although it only shipped with a double-density 3.5" drive.

So, what kind of games/software are you trying to run?

EMS and LanMan 2.2

EMS and LanMan 2.2

Mostly networking related stuff. My Tandy is supposed to log into a Samba server, it works, but consumes every last iota of memory the machine has.

I don't know a lot about SAMBA but it seems that a Tandy TL with only 640 KB available is pretty much base line for getting logged on in the first place. At least that's what I gather from their website. Do you have another or more up to date pc to make a comparison?

Tandy and Samba.

Tandy and Samba.

The Tandy has 640 K availible Conventional RAM. When only DOS is loaded, that drops to about 584 KB.When WATTCP Packet drivers are loaded, that drops to about 474 KB free. When MS Lan Man 2.2a is loaded instead, (can't load Both WATTCP and MS Lan Man, incompatible. it drops to about 308 KB Free. Less to mount a drive share.

I just ordered 4 chips from Jameco for my Tandy 1000 TL/2, to take the memory from 640k to 768k. It was all of $4, and I was placing an order anyway... so why not.

As I understand it, these are of no use if you've got a VGA card, but I'll do a little testing and try to report back.
