Some years ago there was a multitasking software from
Quarterdeck, which allowed me to run several programs
simultaneously on a 286 under Dos. Has anybody used this
software (or similar one)? Are there any public release or
shareware version available?

Right on Terry, the name was DesQview that I could not remember.
How come you know so much????

I haven't used DRDOS at all, and probably I should try it now. As far as I remember, DesQview would split the screen into several sort of windows, and then I could be using one window for a word processor, and another window for executingn an EXE file (although it was painfully slow). Is that how DRDOS works?

Ah, gee...now you're taxing my poor, poor, pitiful memory banks. As I recall, DRDOS doesn't do tiling of it's windows. You can have more than one process running, but only one is on-screen at a time, while the others run in the background. There's hotkeys to jump between active screens, IIRC. If you d/l version 7.01 or 7.02, the download includes documentation, so you can read up on it before installing.
