I have a 720K 3 1/2 disk that I need the files off of. If anyone can transfer these files onto a 1.44Mb disk and/or a 1.2Mb 5 1/4 disk, if would be apreciated. Just post replies here or PM me. Any advice would be apreciated. I can pay any fees and supply the disks. Thankyou!

What system was the disk from?

Assuming it's an IBM-formatted disk:
If you can't read the disk in a new computer with a 3.5 (working) disk drive, there is a problem with the disk.

If it's an Amiga, Commodore, Apple, or other format and you don't have one of these systems available...
I have most systems except for the Sony that can read 3.5 disks and would be willing to try to recover the diskette. Please contact me through my web site, vintagecomputer.net or pm me here. No charge, just send me SASE disk mailer so I can return the disk.

If your data is on a 720Kb disk, you don't need to transfer it to a 1.44Mb disk. Your 1.44Mb drive will read it if it's readable.

Actually many of the 1.44Mb drive and system combinations in the last few years (before they started pulling the drives out entirely) won't read a perfectly fine 720Kb diskette. They expect a true 1.44Mb diskette. Best to move to a somewhat older system to get the data over.

720Kb

720Kb

I have tried reading it with multiple 1.44 drives with multiple systems. I've tied with 2 different branded XP machines(HP,Dell) with my Compaq Presario running '98, and with a Windows ME laptop, all of which failed. I don't know what it(disk) was written for, but it is a 720Kb disk with a program to install a 21Mb Floptical Drive. I need that disk recovered, so I can install a drive to recover 21Mb disks. If that disk doesn't work, I will also need the 21Mb recovered from someone with a little more "expieriance" than me. I've only been in this game for 3/4 a year, but must compliment myself by saying(typing) I have gotten alot of expireance in that 3/4 a year, and alot of computers.:stupid:

Maybe the driver/install program can be had from another source (i.e. downloaded) if you know the model name of the floptical drive.

Well, I have some actual 720K floppy drives and I'd be willing to look at it and see if I can get the info off.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll give you my shipping info.

Actually all 1.44mb disk drives will read a 720kb STANDARD format floppy fine if your using Windows 98 or lower, better yet DOS.

XP DOES NOT READ OLD FLOPPIES RELIABLY

FWIW, I have a 20MB Grassroots branded Floptical drive. Mine came with a BIOS on the SCSI card, so no install disk was necessary, but it did come with a 720kB floppy with qfmt and lfmt utilities on it. If that's what you have/need, let me know, and I can help.

I have a 720K 3 1/2 disk that I need the files off of.

Have you tried taking the disk(s) to the local library or college?
They are typical underfunded and have older hardware.
Just a thought....
