Hello,

My name is Ron and I am working for 2 different museums, one a regular job, the other freelance. My work is originally of geological/mineralogical nature, but I am more and more transgressing into the practical application of minerals in our civilisation.

My current projects are 2 new displays on the role of quartz in the development of mankind.

For my current freelance job the focus is on the development of the role of quartz from the stone age to the computer age.

The other display for my regular job will focus even more on the high-tech applications of silicon.

For both displays I am in need of old computer chips that can be opened. I want to show the silicon and it's intricate pattern. It's in my opinion pure art to see this pattern. At the same time I show some examples of old transistors, older IC's (EPROM's), wafers and a poster with Moore's law.

If anyone could help me to find a selection of nice processors, please take contact with me. Either here on the list, or if you prefer off-list:

We can discuss any kind of compensation you would prefer.

Thanks in advance

Things like the 8051 microcontroller are good, there's loads of them around, they have a clear epoxy window, & on the chip are easily defined areas of processor, ROM, RAM & I/O, you need a fairly powerful magnifying glass to see much detail, but they are on the right scale.

be careful opening cans on some transistors, as some contain berylium oxide, which is nasty, you should be ok with most Audio frequency "TO3" packaged transistors, and you can take the top of the can off with a sharp milling machine, or a dremel cutting disc.

I am also working on a CPU display, each of my displays will have every member of each family of CPU in a stained oak w/ glass case to be mounted on a wall. I've almost got my 486 family completed.

Intel used to give out key-chains with their 486 chips (just the silicon chip) embedded in clear plastic. While you appear to be looking for something earlier, they were pretty cool to look at with a magnifying glass. If you search eBay or elsewhere, you might find one. I may have one buried in a box somewhere... but don't ask me to go look for it.

Ron not quite sure what you are looking for. I have a bunch of 486,386 processors you can have .There might be a couple of math coprocessors in the bunch. Is that what you are looking for. I also have a bag full of old style memory sticks . 1 meg and up. Let me know if this is what you looking for and well discuss how to get them to you.
