Off-board AT keyboard connector

Ok, the connector T sent arrived today, and it's quite the piece of work. Every line is de-coupled to the keyboard connector housing with a .001uF 3KV ceramic cap.

It was mailed on 10/04 from Michigan and got here 10/17.

Meanwhile, the parcel from SanFran was mailed on 10/10 and got here 10/15.

So, it seems that, the farther something has to go, the faster it gets where it's going.

Perhaps we should forget FTL travel and just MAIL stuff to other planets LOL.

If ya look a little closer, there's a diode(?) on each pin as well.

Still no difference.

Obviously, the power and ground are wired correctly, since the LEDs do their POST flash, but the other 3 lines may not be to the motherboard's liking and, since I can't find anything that tells me, I'll have to experiment.

If I remember my math properly, with 3 wires, there should only be 8 possible combinations. (n(squared)-1)

Since the wires are in one of those "press the little lock tab and pull" type blocks, it shouldn't take long to go through all the possible combinations.

I'll let you know......

I'm out of town at the moment, but if you haven't figured it out by Monday I can look & send you the pinout. If I remember correctly, the center pin of the 5-pin header is NC, if that helps.

Chuck, you're so baaaad!

Anyway, here's the pinout:
Header J11 from front of board, left to right; DIN5 from rear (wire side),
numbered clockwise (not the standard way):
J11 < - > DIN5
1 (green) 5
2 (yellow) 3
3 NC
4 (black) 4
5 (red) 2

Note: this is an S550 (AT) but probably the same.

Great, thank you. I'll check the wiring later on today and get back too you with the results.

Mike, I wanted to check one thing with you, because it makes a big difference.

When you were looking at the back of the DIN-5, were the wires oriented to the top or the bottom of the connector (I'm assuming reading left to right in either case).

I guess a better way to put it was the key in the front of the connector up or down?

Yes, I have the S550 AT motherboard.

And here was me thinking it'd be less confusing if I didn't number them the standard confusing DIN way. No, the key is on top as it usually is on a PC, so seen from the wiring side clockwise is right to left in this case; if the key were on the bottom it'd be left to right.

So, assuming you're looking at the back (wiring) and the key (indent) is on top (North), going clockwise:

Pin 1 - East (NC)
2 - SE
3 - S
4 - SW
5 - W

Howzat?

Great, now that I know the orientation, it's just a matter of re-arranging the wires on the motherboard end.

From the looks of it, it's no wonder the cable didn't work :)

I'll keep you posted.

Well, Gentlemen, success.

After re-wiring the motherboard end of the connector, it worked perfectly and the board itself tested out fine.

T, thanks for the connector and Mike, thanks for the info. I owe yas.

No sweat; glad I could help. Good thing Terry sent ya one or you'd still be waiting for me to find one of my spares.

He sent me something too BTW; he sent it abt a week after your cable, but it arrived here the same day as yours; nyah, nyah!

Still haven't made it out to your fine town yet; will give ya a call if/when I finally get over there.
