I hope I am in right place for this request. I am needing an operating system for a Powerer Mac 7100/66. Does anyone have one or at least can get me a copy? I believe it takes either a 7.5.5 or 7.6.1 operating system. I have no experience with a mac so this is all new to me.
Thanks
Mike H.

Hello Mike,

The following links are from Apple itself who has since released System 7 images for those who wish to restore older Apple computers, but they don't make it very easy to find. The first link is to System 7.5.3 and the second one is the update to get it to 7.5.5 If I remember correctly you need an existing mac to make the images. I've never done it so all I can really provide is the links. Hopefully they'll help out. Good Luck!

I have a copy of the "Apple Macintosh CD" that originally came with the 7100/66. I could try and make an image if you need one.

You might as well try to get hold of a used Mac OS 8 or 9, as those will run on the 7xxx series.
OS 9 won't be too fast, OS 8 will be smoother, but the best OS would probably be 7.6, if you don't want to use your machine for mp3 - I'd go with Mac OS 9 and iTunes 2.0.4 in that case.
I had a 7200/90 running 9.1, and it took quite a while to boot that, but then it ran fine.

Two points if you find out you like that Mac and want to use it more that once in a while:
I'd recommend to put as much ram into your 7100 as you can to speed it up.
It would also be nice to have an accelerator card for it.

Thanks for the link to that 7.5.5 update. I'll go and pack the updater on the same Zip disk that I have that currently holds my 7.5.3 installer (which is also a bootable disk).

A 7100/66 is one of the slowest PPC Apple sold (slowest being a 6100/60 I think), you should stick to OS 7.6.1,7.5.3/7.5.5 or the OEM cd.

I used to run 8.1 on a 8100/90 and I have to agree, 7.5.5 or 7.6 would be a better choice for these machines. You can easily find 7.6 CDs on eBay for a few bucks.
