Pre-production CC-40

Well, I got that "supposed" pre-production CC-40 in today. Of course, my first action was to open 'er up!

At first glance, there is no significant difference between this one and a "regular" CC-40. The only thing I've noticed different is insulation on a resistor/transistor kludge. The same kludge is on both this one and another CC-40 I've got, but there isn't any insulation on the pre-production unit.

Of course, I've only taken the back cover off as of yet.

Oh, the box doesn't say "Wafertape not available."

I'll delve further later tonight.

Okay, digging in further. There isn't a dime's worth of difference between pre-production and regular units.

If you open up a regular CC-40, you'll see a clump of inductors around the hexbus connector and a transistor/resistor kludge. From what I've been told, the decision was to leave it as is and fix it in the CC-40+.

I did notice an addition line soldered in between the 2 circuit boards. This could have been accidental as the ribbon cable was missing a lead! Or this could've been another change.

The only other difference I could discern is the print is just slightly different. The print is just VERY slightly thinner. It's almost to the point that it could've been the silk screen was just a tad bit more worn on the later unit!

The guy I bought this from also said that pre-production units could've very well been released to the general public and sold as regular units.

So, if your date code is ATA1283, you MIGHT have a pre-production unit! Or not...
