I became interested in this computer recently and would like to know a few things about it:

1. What is the best IIGS emulator for Windows?

2. Are there any IIGS fansites like Lemon64 or World of Spectrum?

3. Are there any IIGS demoscene sites like CSDb or Demotopia?

4. Are there any IIGS game archives like GB64 or World Of Spectrum?

5. Are there any IIGS chiptune archives like HVSC or Exotica?

"Best" is subjective. An accurate one, but with a fiddly user interface, is KEGS: http://kegs.sourceforge.net/

Not that I know of; doesn't mean there aren't any.

The "fairway" is a good suggestion. (What is the Apple II GS.) Definitely check out my various threads about it to learn from my experiences with the hardware (going to order Null Modem cable next month).

XGS is a good emulator but must be installed in C:\XGS. It has a system 6.01 disk image called "the crate" that you'll need to download. (I haven't been able to get the DOS version of XGS to load on my Packard Bell.)

Cider Press from Faddensoft is good to extract the files you might get online.

For a free online emulator you can play in a web-browswer try www.virtualapple.org

I saw this while looking for some GS emulation stuff, and thought it was awesome.

is made obviously by a guy who also wouldn't understand someone wanting to drive, say, a 1957 Chevy, once again.
On our walk into the future, it's nice to sometimes turn around, pause, and remember how we got here :)
I'd certainly like to own this Apple IIGS running laptop!

Ah, oh. :D My bad.

I must be grumpy because I finally took the ImageWriter II out of the back of my car & opened the box. I can't find the replacement ribbon so far for the printer. Not that I need a printer, but it would be nice to boot her up & see how she works.

So far I've discovered the ImageWriter isn't like my old Dot Matrix Printer that needed papers stuck together & tethered through it using perferated holes. (Know what I mean.) I forget what you call that old printer paper.

When I put a piece of paper into the printer & turned it on, a red error light came on. Then I plugged it into the GS having realized I forgot to do that. Turns out this machine actually detects when there's paper in it. It loads just like a type-writer & in deed when a piece of paper was properly oriented in the red light didn't shine when I turned her on. :D


DING! I just realized David_Schmidt was the name of someone magnus recommend I contact in regards to using ADT PRO in conjunction with a Vulcan Hard Drive. Darn I'm dense. Sorry I forgot you had posted, David. I usually just read the posts
for things I can reply to & easily forget the names. :(

I've got some ImageWriter II ribbon here. A very cool printer, indeed. The paper with the holes on the sides is usually called "pin-feed" paper. I've got manuals and stuff for my ImageWriter II. As a matter of fact, one can still buy BRAND NEW ribbons for it at office supply stores such as Office Depot and Staples. I got a color ribbon online for like $3.50.

I've always been interested in the IIGS ever since I saw one online and bid on it as I tried to acquire my first vintage computer to accompany my ImageWriter. Seems I had manuals and disks for an Apple IIc, I ended up getting an Apple IIc REALLY cheap online in new condition. Good memories.

So now I'm using my file manager on the Vulcan drive to copy disks. When I boot it goes to "Auto" mode which isn't the finder. Near the bottom is the "finder" selection.

So, boot, wait for the Apple II GS 6.01 to load (I love the actual boot displayed on the bottom left of the screen). After that, click FINDER to initialize a 3.5 to make it ready to be copied onto. Open up the "AE1" which is the disk image on screen of the Vulcan. Then select PRODOS to get back to the AUTO mode, select FILE MANAGER from the FILE menu. ETC. ETC.

The reason why is because the older disks are 5.25. I noticed some of them look a little bulgy. They fit in the disk drive but won't come out easily. One of them I had to actually open up the floppy drive (my needle-nosed plyers were stuck in the garage where I couldn't get to them easily).

NOTE: I just today (9/3/2008) ordered a null modem cable & USB adapter cable from RetroFloppy. I'm getting anxious waiting for them to arrive.
