Recommend some C64 Games/Apps

I got my XE/XM switchable adapter and it works great. I'm using OpenCBM to write d64 images to one of my 1541 drives, and finally get get software from the PC to my C64.

With that said, there's a bafflingly large number of games and apps out there for the C64 (it is ofc the most popular single model of computer of all time!), and I was too young when I last used one to even recall some titles.

I know about Ghostbusters, Turtles, Metagalactic Llamas (I don't know how many others have played this, it's pretty great...) and a few others, but would appreciate some direction.

If you could recommend some good games for the C64 (and/or some apps, word processors and the like, maybe a notepad-like editor for BASIC), I'd appreciate it!

It'd be convenient if you also provided a download link, or a link to the gamebase64 page (in the case of games), but even just titles would be helpful!

I played a LOT of sword of fargoal back in the day. very much your typical explore a dungeon and kill everything that moves, but that was my first taste of that genre, and I was hooked pretty quickly.

mildly interesting story: my friend and I played this game on his C64 loaded off of cassette, which took (IIRC) 20-30 minutes to load up. Somehow we figured out that if you were to stop the cassette player after like 17 minutes, you could list the basic source code before it implemented the copy protection.

From there, we learned how to change the player stats and basically cheated our way to winning the game. That experience gave me a taste for software hacking and programming, skills that I carry forward to this day, and are quite likely responsible for my career.
 
I haven't done my research but I'm guessing they're out for c64 but check for Ultima and some SSI games like Pool of Radiance. If you're in to RPG style games those were two winners.

While I'm not much of a C64 person, I enjoy the rather addicting game called Splatform.
(Splatform is also one of the "hidden" games on the C64 DTV).

Look out, now. A lot of the C64 games on the net are PAL-fixed, so be sure to test them on an emulator before transferring them.

ooh, don't get me started on Ultima games! Shortly after my above story, my parents picked up a PCjr and I played U3 for probably close to 2 years straight. That also put my solid on the IBM path over the C64.

I've often thought about writing my own brand new tribute to U3, entirely in x86 assembly, and 8088 friendly, but alas I have way too many other projects to work on. I suspect playing any of the Ultimas on a C64 would be way better than 4 color CGA that I grew up with.

I'm a software engineer for a high tech firm in an R+D environment. I did a lot of BIOS work for PCs, and now I do firmware and other low level test applications for whatever stuff my department comes up with. I learned x86 assembly language while cracking DOS games in the early 90s and then got a job as an assembly language programmer doing BIOS stuff a little bit later. Still with the same company today!

Some of the less mentioned but no less worthy titles include Raid on Bungeling Bay and Mancopter. There are literally hundreds of truly great, classic ones in a catalog of over 10,000...
 
Not sure if it has been recommended to you, but my favorite C64 game is a C64 exclusive I believe. Space Taxi.

It would be easier to recommend some games if you specified some genres you like. You seem to be a person who like to play any kind of game as long as it is well made. To start with there is a top 40 list on Lemon64, click on Games. You can even set minimum number of votes required to enter the list to sort out obscure titles or faked votes.

One thing I don't like about those top lists on sites like that (and I love those sites), is that they're often too broadly based. What do I mean by that? While, for instance, the Commodore 64 has delightful versions of two of my favorite games of all-time - Satan's Hollow and Pooyan - they're not specific to the platform. Same goes for games like M.U.L.E., Bruce Lee, etc. All wonderful, wonderful games, but unless the hands-down best version or something special about these multi-platform games is on the C-64 (or it was the original platform), I think it would be far more rewarding to explore what is unique to the platform, a la the aforementioned "Space Taxi" and "Mancopter". In the case of the one I mentioned, Will Wright's first game, "Raid on Bungeling Bay", it was the first and arguably best version, with solid, but somewhat different ports to the NES and MSX platforms. So in that case, I can with good conscious recommend checking out "Raid on Bungeling Bay" specifically on the C-64. Anyway, that's my thinking with this stuff...
