while on the topic of cleaning puters, there's this stuph called Afta you can get at hardware stores, Home Depot, etc. It works wonders at removing the said mentioned residues and glues etc. A small can is like $4-7, can't remember. But that can will go a pretty long way. Nothing quite does the trick.

WD-40 (or any penatrating oil) will also do a decent job of removing tape or label residue. Wet a paper towel with the oil and lay it over the sticky stuff, let it "soak" for a while.

Penetrating oil will work but I've found it tends to soften plastics.
The best thing I've found was a tip from a guy who does car restoration- Spray n' Wash. It takes the sticky up and doesn't mess up plastic.

There is something that you can get in the store called "Goof-off". It is a citrus based cleaner specifically made for removing tape residue. It works great, and even smells good. I just used it recently to get the residue from a property tag off of an IBM PS/2 50Z. Unfortunately, there is now a discolored square "shadow" where the tag was. Probably from UV damage.

Be careful what you get tho. I used to use sum'n called Goof Off that was used to remove dried paint, and smelled really strong like turpentine or MEK or sum'n. I'd almost guarantee that stuph would eat plastic.
