Hi there.

Finally got my tecmar controller and this IBM5150 playing nice and the pc recognizes the drive. i'm just getting an Error 12 and it can't boot the drive. I'm assuming at this point there's a major failure in the drive but hoping someone might have some advice to perhaps resurrect it?

Thanks!

As far as I know, most 5150 controllers can't handle ST506 (unbuffered seek) 4MB drives. They're geared toward the ST412 (buffered seek) drives.

I know that people call it "ST506 interface", but that's not accurate. PC MFM/RLL drives are ST412 interface.

That being said, you usually can modify the controller's BIOS EPROM to provide very long seek pulses. I did that with a ST506 and Xebec controller and it worked very well.

This particular pc has been paired up with this hard drive for almost 20 years so it *did* work fine.
