Hi all. I just got a Toshiba libretto 30 CTA and was attempting to take it apart. Has anyone got any advice or guides on how to take them apart? I really do not want to damage it as it is in near brand new condition.

My reason for taking it apart was to remove the PRAM battery and to install an IDE to SD adapter.

Does it look similar? If not may have some shared construction design decisions

Thanks! Not sure how I never saw that.

I never heard of a 30... I thought the 50CT was the first model. PRAM is a macintosh specific thing isnt it?
There is a 20 as well. The 20 and 30 use 486 CPUs and are slightly different in design compared to newer models. I'm much more familiar with macs and overlooked the wording. Meant to say clock battery. Thankfully the 20 and 30 have it directly under the keyboard compared to the much more annoying placement on the 50/60/70.

If it's anything like the 50CT, it might have those terrible fake tantalums, essentially electrolytics in a square plastic body. They leak terribly and can do a lot of damage.

The plastic on those units is super brittle, so you may end up breaking the bezel on the screen if you attempt to take it apart.

I noticed them on the motherboard but they havent started leaking yet. Pads are all still shiny and look good.

Does the display have these caps as well? I was hoping they were good quality and would not need to be replaced for a while longer... Even though they are not leaking yet, is it advised that I replace them as soon as possible?

I don't remember if there were any on the display or not, but they need to go as soon as possible. It's not a matter *if* they will leak, it's *when* they will leak. The electrolyte is extremely corrosive and can do lots of damage.

On a side note, does anyone know how to put windows 95/98 one these? I do not have a floppy disk or CD drive and am using and IDE to SD card. Every time I try to install 95 or 98, it gets through the installer, reboots and then gets stuck on a flashing underscore. I have spent a very long time messing around with different versions of windows and booting from the SD card, and have gotten 3.11 to install but nothing newer.

The master boot record could be getting clobbered. You could try running "fdisk /mbr" and see if that fixes the no boot problem.

Those IDE to SD adapters are hit and miss as well, many of them don't work right on older computers. They'll show up, but partitions never work right.

Woah what? I had no idea Toshiba made a 486 libretto… I though the 50CT was the first one!
