I've got a line on a TRS-80 Model 4 128K RAM, dual floppies and a fair-sized box of software. He's asking $150 OBO so I think I might be able to talk him down a bit...what is it really worth? Ebay wasn't much help in trying to determine the going rate.

Is it a 4 or a 4D? The 4D seems a little more scarce than the others. Is it known to work? Will it require shipping? I NEVER trust these machines to be shipped by the owner. They never take enough time to pack these beasties right. They are have an awkward shape, and a strange center of gravity that really takes some effort to pack correctly.

Overall, $150 sounds high to me. I've never paid more than $50 for a plain model 4.

I had a similar situation and turned down the "offer". 6 months later he ended up giving me the machine since no one wanted to spend that much on a machine that he was unwilling to ship.

Personally I'd say it's probably twice the value *but* is this just for your personal collection vs trying to resell it? If they can show it working and they seem to have a large box of software (can be difficult to find assuming they're working) then that adds to the value a little. You could also look around for the binder versions of the software and then have a backup copy.

Just for my collection, I have *zero* interest in reselling it.
I emailed a lowball offer of $50 and she said she'd talk to her husband about it...so we'll see.

Good :) That's much more reasonable and who knows, hopefully they'll go ahead and accept and everyone still wins.

I have a TRS 80, don't know if it works and really don't care. Yours for the asking - in Placerville, CA.

"as much as you'll be willing to pay to replace the one you sold, when you come to regret selling it."

And boy if that isn't the truth. I sent an AMD 100Mhz DX4 to Finland and entertained fantasies of flying there and taking it back, a month later.
