Ultima III arrived !!

My copy of Ultima III came in the mail today, it is complete in the box with everything except for the cloth map (darn!), definitely looking forward to playing it. I always played the Apple II version in the past, this one is the Atari 400/800 version. Don't think I'm going to part with this one anytime soon, anything original early Ultima stuff is hard to come by these days and expensive !!

Now if only I could set some time aside for about 5 days straight where I wouldn't have to go to work, could turn off the ringer on the phone, etc... ;)

Yes, you certainly need time to play these things.

I've spent a few hours on Trinity now, ...I've probably put in 10 hours or so and have 20/100 points and the rank of "Explorer" (just one above tourist).

I'm a little stuck at the moment though. I know what I need to do, I just don;t know how. I'll keep at it though. The pieces of the jigsaw are there..I just have to put them together somehow.

Good luck with Ultima. It sounds like the kind of game which takes some immersion.
 
Awesome. As I've stated before, U3 is probably my favorite all time game, and I played it so much that I started building roads between towns build out of unopened chests. (since the monsters couldn't cross them, I had easy passage between all the major towns) :D

It didn't really matter by that time though, as I'd maxed out everyone's stats so much that I could have easily swept away all the random monsters I met.

I recently re-played U1 and U2, and found that I could finish each one in about a full day or so. Probably would take me at least 3-5x that long to do U3 from start to finish, although I'd probably try to take even longer...

I plan on having my upcoming retirement to be full of game playing. I'm collecting now to enjoy them later. Unfortunately, I don't retire for another 15 years!

Sounds like I got lucky at a thrift/antique store! I found Ultima V for IBM PC, in the box, for $5.00. The box was taped shut, but it felt pretty full, so I bought it, and sure enough, it had everything inside.

The cloth map is in fantastic shape (still feels starched!) with carefully-inscribed strips of paper taped all over it as a location guide. All four 5.25" disks and a save-game disk were included, as well as the Paths of Destiny manual, The Book of Lore, Player Reference, Quick Reference, 3.5" disk drive owner notice, Lord British's Underworld journal, and the little metal coin thing they included just for fun.

I'm tempted to not remove the paper notes from the map, since the condition of the game is definitely used. Together with a few post-it notes and a piece of ruled paper with more handwriting on them, it's like a time capsule to 20 years ago.
 
I had a dream that I found Ultima I, II, and III for Amiga and .. I think Amiga OS version 1 and 2 although when I picked it up off the bookshelf in the dream it was something other than what I thought it was. Bummer.

So if anyone knows a store that looks sort of like a bedroom and bookshelves that sort of turn into and out of drapes let me know because they have some stuff of mine.

luckily for me i completed my Ultima collection last year then, or atleast the main games. :)

prices of Ultima doubles every year it seems, when i got hold of Ultima I about 4 years ago it only cost me about 50 bucks, nowadays it can go for 250 bucks.
 
very nice!! i used to have an original copy of ultima 6. not sure what happened to it. i do still have the original compendium though. i was playing u6 earlier this week on my 286. i spent so much time playing it when i was a kid. i'd sit in school all day thinking how much fun it would be when i got home to play ultima 6. :mrgreen:

i've played ultima 7 before too, but i didn't like it as much. i tried the older ultimas as well, just to check them out. i never got into any of them like i got into ultima 6 - i'm not sure why. they were missing something.

plus the map in 6 is HUUUUUGE... (at least for 1989 RPG standards)
 
I guess it's bad for me to admit I've never played any of the ultima games, I'll just have to check them out now, can anyone point me in the right direction as to which system they prefer to play them on for the best experience?
 
Personally I prefer the Apple II line of computers for the early Ultima stuff (I-IV), but again, that's just a personal preference maybe more out of nostalgia than anything else. My Atari 400/800 version of Ultima III plays pretty darn nicely though.

me too, but for me it was Ultima 7 that i was daydreaming of at school, planning what caves i would search for and so on. :)
