WANG WLTC Laptop "eight treasures"

Wow, i love Wang machines so much, i wish there were more around these days. But looking at the pic i kinda know why there's not many around, you gathered most of the survivors i guess... :p

So an easy question - why 10 of the Wang laptops? Will you keep collecting them until you have a thousand of them? or until the house if full? Or was 10 already the "magic number"?

i don't believe there are 1000 on earth available.
in china the numer 8 and 108 is magic.
#10 + 8 treasures =108 simsalabim, ;-)
who knows sometime i get one more, just for fun or should i consult a doctor?

Found a WLTC that I had stored away. No power supply came with it so no idea if it will do anything. Also found a Phillips 16 VDC power supply that looks like it might work.

Any hints on what to check on it before applying power?

If the 12V Ni-Cd Akku inside, take it out!
Open the case and cut the big cmos-battery from the mainboard.
Often is bad and the WLTC would not boot.

The WLTC needs 18V + inside - outside, the original powersupply supports 21V 1,6 A.

Otherwiese 12V (old PC-powersupply) to the Akkuconnector.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info. It has been sitting for over 8 years, mostly uncontrolled storage so I expect the batteries to be shot, hopefully their is minimum corrosion on the circuit boards. Will be able to get inside it next week and will update on what I find.

The battery inside is not for the "cmos", it is for the internal clock.
There are no cmos-data need to know, they came form the first file on the boot-medium, called "bios.sys" Vers.: 4.00 or 4.01 is the WLTC Bios.
Lower and higher Versions are for the "TANK" (PC and APC).
The internal 10MB Winchester has SCSI ID 0. On the external SCSI connector you can use SCSI Drives with low capacitives, like ST-125N, ST-325N, ST-296N, ST-1096N, Quantum LPS 42S, Prodrive80S, Conner CP3040A, Seaquest SQ555 44MB and SQ5110 Drives, 88 and 44MB Media, are testet.
Only Max. 33MB useable with the MS-Dos 3.20.

!!! But they must be prepared on the WLTC with the "init" command to make it useable for backup data.!!!

Hope your Winchester works ;)

Haha, maybe the doctor might be an option... Nah wait, spare the money for the doctor and start collecting other Wang computers... They have such beautiful desktop machines. Back in the 1980s I thought Wang will one day rule the computer market. The original Wang PC was brilliant, a 16-bit design and they already had graphics in the word processing software, everything looked so cool. There was also a rare (and expensive) Wang color graphics adapter and screen. If they only had more software... If i could go back in time i would write games for the Wang PC...

Their later APC model was not so much "wang" any more, mostly IBM PC compatible, but due to some weird emulation stuff - they kept being stubborn.

Imho both are very collectible.

The Wang Freestyle tablets were also soooooo awesome, actually they were one of the most awesome products ever made. Unfortunately they were so expensive that even the richest companies and government agencies couldn't afford them. You can get a wang freestyle tablet with pen for like 40 Dollars on ebay, but the freestyle station (the actual computer for it) will be hard to come across.

In my eyes 1 Wang Laptop per person is enough, okay a second one if you need a spare, but 8 can already be called madness. 108 would be... prolly cool again, but would also be cool to leave some for other collectors, eh?

*Gasps*

No way you must be kidding... Or do you have access to a secret Wang Museum? How much ist the entrance fee? As soon as my wife is on vacation I'll come around!

Argh, when was that auction? On ebay? I search for Wang WLTC pretty often, but they are always too expensive. Last year there was one for over 300 Dollars on ebay, a bit too much for the little family income to secretly spend...

How much for a WLTC? Damn i've wanted a WLTC or Desktop for soooo long.

Wow, omg. Actually Vienna would just be around 1000 Km from where i live. And my wife is on vacation in May.... Hmmm...

I didn't even know that dutch website. That's actually a steal. Do people even realize that they are giving away a piece of computing history for the amount of a good lunch???

Hi Austrian and international collagues! I recently collected a WLTC as well. After removing the clock backup battery the system showed signs of life, even the hard drive starts to spin. Unfortunately the power-on diagnostic fails with error "57 System Card Failure". I assume this relates to a mainboard fault. There is some indication of battery leakage (corrosion on the battery connector and a capacitor next to it), but visually things overall look ok. Hence I doubt that this corrosion is causing the error. Unfortunately I couldn't find any manuals or other documentation related to this system. Anybody here able to help?
