Doom. To me it was a revolutionary 1st person shooter, and inspired many great games, whose sequels exist today. Duke Nukem 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Half Life, and so many more wouldn't be in existence today without that revolutionary push. Or, they would, but would be 2D scroller games.

i voted for Wolfenstein 3D... i had the digital shades 3d version with special lcd glasses...

it also was the predecessor to doom...

FPS fans, huh? ;-) I must say that I'm very selective with what FPS games I like, though I certainly love Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Maybe even Wolfenstein a bit more because it's so straightforward... I'm a fan of the Halo series too...

I also voted for Doom, in terms of pure influence on gaming - it not only started the FPS explosion, but also kicked off the technology race in consumer 3D cards.

I was tempted to list M.U.L.E., because of it's influence on game designers - it had excellent balancing mechanisms that forced the players to both compete (against each other) and cooperate (to raise the colony's final score). It was no fun to win via cutthroat means and be Mayor of a backwater dirt village. It really brought the game out of the screen into the living room, where interactions between 4 players was where the action was.
