Your Modern Computer

Someone I know bout that exact computer for HD Video editing of weddings.

Gota love it..
The side effect of such a nice machine, is it's gaming capabilities.

I was just playing Quake 4 with some surround sound headphones on it, at 1440x900 with 4x anti-aliasing and full quality, at like 114fps..

And dear god, that's one creepy game, but good.. Not good to play on the Mighty Mouse..

My newest pair of machines are older then dirt:

AMD XP1500+ 1GB RAM 60GB HD used for apps/email/etc
AMD XP2000+ 512MB RAM 120GB HD used for older windows games, MAME etc

Everything else is older and slower.

One of these days (maybe when diablo III or starcraft II comes out) I will build a new gaming machine. Might even get one after Christmas. I used to upgrade like mad from the early 90's to about 2001 when I got bored. Funny thing is after a year or two of falling behind it is kind of fun to see how far behind you can go and still get things done before you have to upgrade.

The thing is after 2002 or so I got bored with current games and mostly play retro ones (hence a house full of Amiga/DOS/Apple II/AtariST/etc). The last game I got hooked on was the Age of Empires II: Age of Kings which I played nonstop online from when it came out untill Microsoft took down THEZONE for online play a few years back.

Because I do a bit of photography, art & movie production, I used an Celeron based system (2.8Ghz) with 512Mb. I've used it to watch Digital TV though and play widescreen DVDs as well.

Bit of a pity though that DOS cannot handle all that! :-( I guess I'd need a good Office compatable suite for DOS as well! :-o Openoffice seems to be the ticket to fight Piracy! And there's lots of good Free stuff out there - so it's almost pointless pirating anything!

For Art I use stuff like Ultimate Paint, GIMP & MS Paint! There's perhaps a lot more you can do comercially, hence why people swear by Photoshop - personally I feel for anyone to have it legit, to work for it - I just don't see the sense in obtaining it!

Movies perhaps like art is also another area where you need to pay to do something. I brought the Cyberlink DVD Solution, which is good and again perhaps how much I paid for it, reflects on that - though there's still some nifty stuff you can do which makes it easier to show photos & stuff by producing it on DVD.

I guess now I've become a two-faced son of a gun who spends more time in the environment - and using technology in that sense to generate something & yet may go some day generating something for CP/M! :-D

I had an old Pentium based IBM (which I still used for DOS based games), though with the onslaught of Digital Cameras, Environmental research, etc, etc, you need a newer computer to support them! :-o

Pretty cool, Looks like I am the only one that has an Lenovo sort of an IBM.

I am surpurised not more of you use more vintage systems for everday stuff... I don't do much on my PC in the way of games or moives ect. I bet I could get away with a 566 and Windows 98. Not vintage but still old and useless to most of the world!

My "main" computer is a Dell Dimension E520 with a 2.66 GHz Pentium D (dual core), 3 GB of RAM, a total of 660 GB of hard drive space (two drives), and an ATI Radeon X1300 Pro video card. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.10 on it.

I also have an HP Pavilion dv2037us notebook, 1.6 GHz Centrino Duo with 2 GB RAM and 100 GB hard drive, also running Ubuntu 8.10.

I think a lot of us do use older gear for non-internet related stuff. I certainly do conversion and microcontroller development on older x86 gear--the speed of newer stuff doesn't make a heckuva lot of difference in the overall picture.

Simple text editing can be performed on just about any system made in the last 20-30 years.

But newer programs generally have gotten more bloated (both with code and features) to make them less practical on older equipment. So you do what you have to.

my "modern" computer is an ibm thinkpad t30 that i cant for the life of me rember anything about except it has a Pentium 4 2.0 ghz iirc and some sorta hard drive. lol second most used computer would be one of my three ibm p70 portables with 386s at 25 mghz that i use at school.

My most used computers would be:

An iMac, 800mhz 768 MB ram. DVD burner, 80 gig HD, speakers and iLife. OS X.4

Mac Performa 7500/100 4 gig HD, 80 MB ram MAC OS 9.1

P3 laptop, 850 mhz, 20 gig HD, 256 ram Win 2000

At one point in time, I did use an AT&T PC 6300 as my main computer for about a month when my good PC took a crap and I didn't have any money. That was intresting.

I'm thinking about making my HP a secondary set-up to use just for high-graphics and using my Packard Bell P75 as my main computer. All I ever really do is check my assorted e-mail accounts, and the forums. Every now and then I check for something VERY specific on eBay, which would be slow on the Packard but not as bad as just browsing. As I said though, I'd have the HP around for that stuff, and games, etc, probably using it only once every few days.

Of course, It's also been in my mind to use my IBM PS/2 70 386 as a main computer. 9MB RAM, allocated for expanded memory, low VGA resolution, I figure it should be able to check the forums. I could just downsize to one EXTREMELY low graphic e-mail account(dial-up BBS) and be fine...

A project for a rainy day...or one rainier than now, lol.

The top 10 reasons Terry's Dell is still 'in service'

10. It's only a piece of crap if 'you' believe it's a piece of crap.
09. Appearances just don't matter to an inanimate object.
08. His other computer is an IBM.
07. TLC doesn't really mean a thing in this case.
06. Appearances can be deceiving.
05. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
04. He owns stock in Duct Tape Inc.
03. Let ye without flaws throw the first stone.
02. He 'accidentally' dropped it - but it still works!
. . . . . and the # 1 reason . . .
01. It was a gift from a dear friend :)

My main machine is a (S478 ) P4 3.0 GHZ (HT) with 2 GB of DDR and a 160 GB HD and an ATI AIW 9800 series graphics card running XP Pro (SP3). It does everything I want it to, so, I'm happy.

My other one is a Cray XMP5 laptop :)

The Zeroth Reason...

The Zeroth Reason...

Ya forgot, Vint,

00. So many real computer projects on his ToDo list, he won't get to this one until it is vintage too.

LOL! You forgot to mention that it might be running the relevant version of CP/M in this case or a decent DOS. And no I'm not affiliated with Digital Research or parent companies in any way! :-D

Oh, hush! Wait'll ya see what I'm sending ya tonight! BWAHAHAHAHAAA!

(5.5 inches (so far), and it's got you in it's crosshairs)...

If you're talking snow, we're supposed to get "trace" amounts until about the 8th, then 15cm (about 6 inches).

Probably get here LONG before that stuff you're supposed to ship me LMAO

AMD Athlon 3500 2.0Ghz
2 GB RAM
HD: 160G + 120G
OS: Ubuntu Linux 8.04
1 CD Burner, 1 DVD burner
Multi-card reader
IBM Model M Keyboard (ha ha ha)
Onboard everything except for one old Sound Blaster card
ATI TV Tuner card

Probably some other junk I've forgotten. ...oh yeah, I have Windows installed on another Partition, but I never use it since it bluescreens too much.

.......My secondary system is a;

eMachines T2200
AMD Athlon 1.8 GHz CPU
which contains a video capture card.
I use this machine for running all my vintage 8-bit machines hooked through the capture card for video display. That way my modern monitor functions for use with my Atari 600XL, Atari 800XL, Commodore VIC-20, Commodore 128 (in 40 & 80 column modes), Commodore Plus/4, Tandy Color Computer 2, TI994/A, Apple IIe and my Apple IIc.

Heya Vint,

Would you please explain more about HOW you use the video capture card for
vintage computers?

Thank you very much
