5mb or 10mb hard drive.

Hi
Although, 5 Meg drive were first used, most XTs would
only work with a minimum of a 10 Meg drive. Many 5 Meg
drives were scrapped because of this.
I believe it was some issue with the DOS driver.

The real issue with using the ST506 was the unbuffered seek. The IBM/Xebec controller, while it had hardware to support the 506, did not implement said support in the BIOS.

I was able to take a Xebec BIOS ROM and rework it so it would run a 506.

There was a guy here a couple of months back with a load of ST506s. I don't know if he sold them all, though. I've got a 506, but you'd have to make me a real offer on it.

then the 412 it is, if one of you has one, i sure would like to get my hands on 1 maybe even 2 of them. Not sure what they are worth honestly. But keep my posted :)

Billdeg, the 506 would be going into one with a WD controller. I do have a Xebec controller though.. gotta figure out how to low level on it

where are you located? It's hard to find working drives. Spinrite is an excellent program to use to low level format a computer with an xebec disk controller

ST-506

In case you don't know, IBM never supplied the ST-506 in it's PC family line of products.

I'm unaware of any controllers for the 5150/5160 that (out-of-the-box) are compatible with the ST-506. That's not to say that they don't exist though. I have an ST-506. I have some early controllers that should have worked with it but didn't: 3 mS stepping, dynamic geometry support, 'reduced write current' signal.

As Chuck alluded to, some (repeat: some) controllers can be modified to work with the ST-506. I discovered that suitable modification to the BIOS in a DTC 5150BX controller (also a 5150CX) works. And so if you want to use an ST-506 in your 5160, make sure you have a controller (modified or unmodified) that you know for fact is compatible with the ST-506.

hmm, knowing that, st412 it is definetly. I'm refraining from the xebec controller though, too much to go into setting it up, i have that spare wd-1002-ax which is currently formatting a micropolis 1304. HAD a WD25, heads wouldn't move, popped the top and they were stuck in the tracks if you get the drift.

I am located in seattle, i can get some vintage parts decently, others are non-existant. Strangely though, MFM controllers and full height floppies are a dime a dozen here...
