Is there a program like the data recovery program Tiramisu that will run on an XT system? Tiramisu will only run on a 286 and above. The hard drive in my Leading Edge Model D has not worked right since I got it, but I wanted to see if there was any useful stuff on it before I low level format the drive.

I also gave SpinRite a go, but the program would terminate at the start of the scans due to it not being able to find the drive's sub-leve; some error like that.

It's a no-go. Norton Disk Doctor terminated and said that the disk type couldn't be read. I tried a couple of different programs and they all reported read errors. DOS always reports a seek error when doing anything with the disk. I think it's time for a low-level format.

What's the drive and controller?

Pull them and run in a 286+.

There's always a chance that the drive will turn out to be unuseable meaning that you might not be able to LLF it.

That was what I was going to do next. When I put the drive in another computer, which drive type would I set to allow the computer to work with the drive?

The drive is a Seagate ST-251 and the controller is a Western Digital WD1004A-WX1.

Isn't drive type more for ATA drives ? I should think if the WD controller is mated to the ST-251, you should be able to just plug it all in, since the BIOS on the WD should take care of it.

I have a ST-238R and a ST11R(have a spare if you want one) controller, I don't need to select any settings into computer BIOS, the BIOS on my controller takes care of everything, as patscc said. Does the drive appears in FDISK? The controller recognizes the drive?

DLO is going to put the drive/controller into an AT machine. You know that the drive type needs to be set in that type of machine regardless of what (BIOS) the controller has on it. Additionally, all the drive types are for MFM drives and not ATA drives since they're all 17 sectors.

DLO, use ... 820 6 17 fot that drive.

Ops, my bad, I was thinking on a XT system.

I see "other machine", I don't see AT.
Is it going into an actual AT, or a clone ?
There are ATA drives out there that specify 17 SPT, by the way, and ATA is a different beast anyway since the drives do some sort of CHS remapping.
