Hello,

Are there any new alternatives to the old Macintosh LC HDD? I know it is going to give out one of these days, just thought I'd be prepared.

Hey vwestlife,

Thank for the link. Would you happen to know where I can get more of a step by step direction of how to do this all? Especially the reformatting of the HDD, I just got into older macs and don't know my way around very well. Or if you know where I can just find more information on this subject?

Thanks very much

While you have the system running I would make a set of system 7 floppies as should the hard drive fail it'll be a pain to setup without a system to write the floppies, unless you have them already. The floppies can be found on the Apple Older Software Page, and the easiest way of copying is a Zip drive from my experience, a SCSI Zip on the Mac and a Parallel\USB\Internal on the other system.

I gave my sister a LC III when she went away to college. It was pretty old even then, but I can confirm that it worked with a 1000MB SCSI HDD that I installed in it. She used it all the way up to graduation without incident.

Thanks for all the info! I'm assuming the "Apple Older Software Page" is somewhere on the forum? I tried to look for it, but couldn't find anything. I'm still very new to this forum, could someone please point me in the right direction? I'm assuming I will need O.S. 7 for a Macintosh LC? I don't suppose I can download the mac software from the internet on a modern mac and then transfer it to a floppy disk that way and have it all work? I don't have an SCSI Zip drive lol. Could the LC read the floppy even if it was written by an modern mac?

Thanks!

Hi,

Here's a link to a place that I have gone to before while trying ti maintain my old Macs:

http://lowendmac.com

I've gotten a lot of good information from their Tech Specs, Software and Downloads sections.

Good luck!
