recently picked up a Packard Bell 2440 with a 75mhz pentium 1. figured it could make a decent DOS computer and wanted to get it running again. after replaceing the internal fan, PSU, floppy drive and through cleaning it booted ok and went to the origional Win95 that was still on the hard drive. It acually ran win95 ok but i wanted to use it for dos or maybe play around with OS/2. formated the hdd and installed DOS 6.22 but now I have 2 issues.

1) Dos drivers will not detect my cd-rom drive, the boot screen detects the drive and it worked fine in windows but I cant get DOS to "see" it. I partitioned the hdd into 2 c: and d: so i assumed the cd drive would automaticly get e: like it has on every other pc i've tried but nothing. i tried changing d: to e: in the autoexec and system config but still it detects no drive. i'm assumeing its something simple i'm overlooking.

2) I cant seem to install any other expantion cards other then the aztech sound/modem card that came with it. when i replaced it with a SB32 on bootup I got a ton of conflict errors. this happened to a lesser degree when i tried to slap in a S3 virge video card. with the virge in the system fails to detect the hard drive.

1) You will need to load the appropriate DOS driver in CONFIG.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT
Hope you have Packard Bell supplied discs; some of their hardware won't work with generic drivers.

2) Is your system one of the PB's with built in video? If it is, you will need to find the jumper to turn off motherboard video. Some systems didn't have that jumper and only worked with the motherboard video.
Aztech -- Did you remove card and all the drivers before putting in the SB32? What I remember was that the best way to change cards was to remove the Aztech, install new card and then do a clean OS install so there is no remnant of Aztech drivers to complain.

the sound card issue is resolved. I can live with the onboard video since its a half decent CL chip.

I do not have the drivers cd, nothing but the computer. is there s work around or are the drivers avaliable anywhere?

I am glad that you got some of the issues resolved.

An old PB cd-rom support page is http://www.oocities.org/siliconvalley/lakes/8774/system/CDrom.html but the links to PB website for downloads no longer work. Maybe that could help you with future searches.

A very good generic CD-ROM driver for DOS is made by Oak Technologies. Used to be easily located but a quick web search didn't turn up a web site hosting a copy that looked trustworthy. Maybe you will have more luck.

Otherwise, you could change to a CD-ROM that works with the drivers you have access to. ATAPI CD-ROMs are still pretty cheap.

ah, so its the cd-rom drive itself thats an issue and not the motherboard? if thats the case yhea, i can swap out the origional no problem, its slow and i'm guessing nearing the end of its life anyways.

thanks for the help.
