Honeywell H316 on ebay

Ah, the front panel designed by committee…

One thing to consider when thinking about restoring an H316 is that the ICs are all (or nearly all) flatpacks. Not that replacing a flatpack is all that difficult, but that case style is not nearly as common as thru hole DIP.

Thanks! So these can operate standalone? There isn't supporting equipment required (ie. whatever those cut ribbon cables went to?).

I'm just wondering how you're supposed to figure out what the computer is doing with the front switches if you have no indicator lights..

I have been giving it serious consideration....wondering if the red front panel is covering the lights / not stock. I'd be interested to see what is behind the red panel. Too bad someone scratched out the "Honeywell" upper right corner

Wow, OK - no lights. I have to wonder why you would have them as an option, yet still have the switch panel as standard.

I think the one at RCS has the indicators, but I have not seen that machine in a long time.

H316 always struck me as a half-baked design anyway.

I think the showstopper for me is the missing power supply. Without that.. you'd never get it working anyway. And the odds of coming across one are probably slim to none..

There were three versions of this machine. The 316-01 had a thinner red front panel cover, sqaure register buttons and data lights above the switches. The other models, 316-0100 and 316-0110, had a wider cover plate, flat register buttons, and no data lights above the front panel switches.

So, the ebay sale is for what was likely a racked "table top" version

See page 225 of this doc

I have some color brochures and user manuals as well.

system used +6V, +15V. Could poss use a tweaked DEC h742a and associated voltage regulators (h754, h744 (pushed to 6V is not out of the question) to power it.

must be some sort of turn key unit that relied on the teletype for output. there are no data lights on this version of the front panel. I updated the text of my earlier reply (prev page) to include updated info. and links to the manual online

If it was a turn key system surely it wouldn't need a full set of switches? The switches must light similar to the 516.

According to the docs I haveI don't see how, the lights above the switches indicate 0 or 1. The switches are for control. I admit it's a weird design, why buy a version without data lights? I need to read more to learn more.

I was tempted too but am conserving funds for an Altair. Plus at 150lbs the international shipping rates made me lightheaded.
