A custom bit of Apple II hardware is required for VCF's Maker Faire exhibit this year, and RetroHacker_ who's doing the building wanted a protoboard. Apparently none of the current offerings are just pad-per-hole, or are not regularly available. Doing a run of 5 to make sure there aren't any errors.

Egads! They're in already! The boards:

I sized the holes to accomodate 2 Watt resistors, relays, et c, without drilling:

And, installed in my (apparently incredibly dusty!) Apple IIe:

Cool. Do you plan to get more? I might be interested in a few of these. Also, just being nosy, what is the card between the 80 col & SuperSerial boards?

Cheers,
Dave

Holy crap, please clean out that IIe.

It must've been one of the machines in the front room when our idiot contractor cut off a chimney without tarping the fireplace openings first...150+ years of soot and lime mortar dust *everywhere*. I didn't realize the IIe had been blasted, but it's going out to the shop for a blow-out this weekend.

Yes! Once the XT-IDE run is done, I'll probably order a batch of these, with gold edge fingers too.

I can't find the thread I put together on it, but it's an Interactive Microware ADA-LAB analog/digital I/O card. Here's some pictures of it being a big voltmeter:

would you have any of your Apple ][ prototype cards left ?
I see here you made some back in June
I won't make it to any workshops just yet,
and VCF is still 2mons away
so I hope I could get some mailed over here.

Dan,

PM sent! I haven't run the final design but I've got a few of the prototype prototype boards :)

Huh! Nice work!
Personally I prefer glitch's kind of layout versus say this one, Far more flexible.

Yeah, I understand that the particular board you linked was intended for hooking a logic analyzer to the Apple II bus, but the layout really doesn't appeal to me for prototyping. That's why we laid out the new board!

Also if there's a possibility, Do you think you can do a another run of boards with the kind of hole spacing to accommodate, say a through-hole DB-9/DB-25 connector?
(notice the weird triangular spacing of the pins)

I could add it on there, but it won't work with most Apple II slots. You're better off with a pin header and a short cable to the DB-9/DB-25 so that the connector can be bolted to the back of the Apple II case. This is how old Apple II cards do it, and it works with all possible Apple II slot arrangements.

I just ordered the production run of these boards, which will look like this:

The edge connector will be plated with hard gold, which provides superior contact performance and wear resistance. It also adds a lot to the cost -- the smaller Apple II protoboard, with no solder mask or silkscreen, actually costs *more* than the XT-IDE rev 3 boards due to the larger number of edge connector teeth that must be plated! Should still come in around $10/board though.
