386 Bios HELP!

Hi there,

I am encounting a startup bios problem on a 386 MB. It's stuck at the bios running saying "keyboard error". i couldn't do anything to get into the bios setup. The MB is an all soldered-on chips board. I wonder if replacement is my only way or else. Maybe a bios reburning would help...

Check the battery for signs of leakage.

When this happened on my 486 board, it turned out that the keyboard fuse needed to be replaced. The keyboard fuse is usually (but not always) a small yellow ceramic cylinder that looks like a resistor and sits near the keyboard port on the motherboard.

But, this problem can also be caused by bad solder joints on the keyboard port (plugging and unplugging the keyboard too often can do this), or even just a bad keyboard. I suggest you check those two things first before de-soldering the keyboard fuse.

Also, try another keyboard as it may be either actually defective or an XT type keyboard. Check on the bottom to see if you can find a slide or dipswitch with AT/XT settings.

Someone else recently reported that their keyboard error was because of the 'keyboard lock' functionality on the motherboard.
They had to put a jumper over the 'keyboard lock' pins.

Thank you very much for the comments. I have had trials running over the weekend. Finally engaged with a "new" 386 MB costing me a brand new up-to-date MB
