Any suggestions on a source for one or more 40-pin DIL NEC uPD765 floppy controller chips? Mine may be sick or dead.

None of the usual sources carry them, as far as I can see, unless there are compatibles that I don't recognise.

If necessary, I'll buy a whole card to get the chip (within reason).

eBay is full of 'em (try Intel 8272A, NEC D765AC, UPD765A, Zilog Z0765A, etc.) It's not an uncommon part in most of the world; I don't know about the situation in Oz, however. It's also present on several word processors, such as the Amstrad Joyce.
