Does anyone know (definitively) if a 486SLC2 is both pin-for-pin and voltage rail - ie. a true drop-in replacement - for a 386sx? And I mean desolder the sx and solder-in the slc2.

I've read conflicting information online. Since the 386 members require a CLKx2 input, I assume the SLC runs at the same clock speed as the 386sx and an SLC2 would run at the CLKx2 speed (twice the instruction clock of the sx).

I have a Cx486DLC 40 MHz and an i386 DX 33 MHz in front of me and they are pin for pin compatible, however both are PGA. My beloved 386 mobo died and needs some capacitor replacement work one of these days. Do you have the equipment for wave soldering or will you attempt to just use a solder sucker? Daunting task. I'm not sure about 386 SX.

there were several variations to 486slcs. different manufacturers with different requirements but were all marketed under similar names.
there was one 5v cyrix/ti part that is a drop in replacement, but they're pretty much impossible to find today. parts being sold on fleabay are 5v tolerant 3.3v parts that some claims to work as a drop in replacement, but gets rather warm (and probably will have substantially shorter service life being powered at 5v) you can find the details on amibay where people were replacing 386sx on their bridge boards with those.

Forgot to mention that mine is a Cyrix Cx486DLC-40GP 5v and is marked "For OEM Use Only".
