I see lots of DSHD floppies formatted as DS2D in typewriters, word processors, etc. Most are at least 20 years old. I haven't seen that they're any less permanent than genuine DS2Ds.
I used a few of them with my Atari ST - I got them for free, which was a big deal when I was young and disks were expensive!
I did get a couple of corruptions on these disks, and it happened often enough that I made sure I never put anything on them that I couldn't replace - stuff I knew my best friend had that I could re-copy from him if necessary.
I do remember thinking they were really cool though, because ST disks were usually blue, and these HD ones were black
Of course, this is only one data point - one drive and about ten disks, both manufactured over 20 years ago.
