annoying limitations

I spent a lot of time using an amptron 66 bus p1 susyem at 120 mhz. 430 chipset. it had a 128k ram limit and it disliked many of the larger dimms. It almost choked on my 10.2 g hard drive. but win 98 was not too bad.
I Graduated to an asus pcb slot 1 system a bit beyond the scope of this forum and then to a newer system, and eventually kicking and screaming to 2000 and then xp. first bump was when I bought my NEW BIG 160gb hard drive, Having leaned that fdisk with 98 even the newer one really did not like anything above 40g ( they claim 60g) I partitioned the drive 40 x 4,
the first three were ok but after a lot of trouble. I was alerted to the 137g limit and 48lba.
By this time I was using w 2000 and later xp.
here's the problem:
it installs from a floppy. there are NO docs. When do you install it? after? no the drive is not recognized
BEFORE ? there is no registry.
I suspect you keep the floppy in A: and install it during setup
BUT I AM NOT SURE,
It is strange that a utility is provided with no method of how to install it.
I may try with a less than trustworthy 160g drive and another pc to see how it works
HAS anyone used it or been successful.?
I am about to re activate My Tyan trinity s1590 system not that I have pc100 dimms in a bag. I need a system to test parts and this one is a good choice. But I will be re visiting some of these older issues including lack of 48lba addressing
A hint: most mb with SATA already have 48lba support and DO NOT have the 137 gb barrier.

I believe it was fixed in a service pack for the size issue, but I think I'm missing something. What is needing to be installed from floppy? Most XP and 2000 distros I recall boot off the CD.

Walter is referring to the Maxtor Big Drive Enable utility for HDD's larger than 137GB. It requires Win2kSP3 or WinXPSP1 and needs to be installed prior to connecting the large hard drive.

yes too mmuch detail. I sould NOT have mentioned WHERE I AM NOW,
I do not recall how many ppc;'s I have gone thru or how many times I have restored and upgraded.
this 120/137 gb limit was annoying and I dod not know the reason
even wd dis not tell me. That is hisory now.

I still woner how the <Maxtor Big Drive enabler works
or what it does
accpording the M$ it is (only) a registry entry.
Wim's rainbow has many unofficial bios patches for early pentium 1 and similar. motherboards- but only to 128gm.
