Another Model II For Sale

Does anyone know if the TPI disk drives are mains-frequency dependent like the old Shugarts?

The drive motor on the TPI is AC with a separate power feed just like the SA800. I refer to the 8" TPIs as a Shugart clone because they are very similar in design and appearance. Almost identical to the casual observer. But, I have never found any documentation on them. I assume their development was a typical Tandy cost-cutting maneuver.

Thanks or the heads-up. I can't import these machines because the 60Hz disk drive runs at the wrong speed at 50Hz in Australia. Tandon TM-848 based machines (basically all from the Model 16 onwards) work fine here.

Looks like someone finally bid and won that m2 with the 128k sticker. If you're on this list, please share what you find inside of that machine. I expect a M16 upgrade kit with the 68000 CPU board and a matching 128k board along with the upgraded PSU.

Off topic here but Ian, Wouldn't you need a 50Hz motor and the drive belt? When I was going through some of the Shugart 800's I think I did see 2 or 3 for 50hz operation. I do need to double check though.

Correct, all that is needed is the motor and belt. Trouble is finding those individual items has been harder than finding 50Hz versions of the complete Shugart 800 disk drive...

If you can find a simple "dual voltage" primary transformer (2 120V primary windings) or a UK step-down transformer for portable tools or electric shavers (220V-110) you need only find a pulley. I've done that with 220V/60Hz drives here in the US.
