Anyone have a running Nexgen CPU+ Motherboard?

The NexGen was a very good concept at inception... but due to lack of cash they dropped the ball on advancing development quick enough

The original NexGen (the P version) lacked an integrated FPU.. so suffered due to this
Over the period that it was produced.. only a year, NexGen released it in 5 core revisions

NexGen did produce a FPU (587).. but only engineering test boards exist to take this... and I dont think anyone has one with a valid bios rom to make use of the 587.
But at the same time they did develop the PF version which included an integrated FPU.. but only just before AMD bought NexGen

My personal opinion... a unique system with a hint of lemon
But historically.. very important.. especially to AMD
AMD used the NexGen development team to come up with a replacement to the K5 lemon.. and the K6 was born

If AMD hadnt bought NexGen... guessing history may have been very different in the battle between Intel & AMD

on a side note... anyone with a PF version NexGen (has a brown heat-spreader) and wanting to sell.. send me a PM ;-)

Even though it might be rare, I don't think anyone is rushing to purchase one for that price. I remember Tiger Direct advertising systems with this CPU heavily, since it was a "budget option". I'll have to check and see if my friend still has the NexGen box he came across in the thrift store over a decade ago, its something he likely kept over the years.

about $200 is a more realistic value for a board with P version NexGen at the moment in the US
thou one in Europe will fetch $400

I paid top of the market for my PCI board but managed to secure a complete VLB board for only $50
 
Why is it that people in Europe seem to pay more for stuff then people here in the US, it can't be that shipping adds that much to the price of a motherboard?
 
for every 1 rare computer item that comes up in Europe.. there would be 5 - 10 that come up in same time in the US
any US seller (of a rare item) that doesnt ship outside North America is missing a large market base

Here locally in Oz.. things are way over priced.. if they every come up at all
But if the seller starts off as a cheap auction.. good chance you could get for a bargain as there is so few collectors here.
Doing a quick count.. guessing less than 15 active collectors and half of those only collect CPUs

I keep a watch locally of anything nice that comes up.. but 95% of my purchases are made in the US

Another reason for the high prices in Europe.. is the eWaste laws
where older computers items (especially ex business) have to go thorough official waste recyclers never to been seen again
so even with a population similar to the US.. only about 10 - 20% of computers items (compared to the US) manage to circumvent being crushed and ground up

I have always wanted to try a NexGen as well. Back in the day there was always hear say about them but nobody actually played or seen one in person. I still haven't played with one yet and at those prices I probably won't. The CPU's seem to go for about $100 and the motherboards about the same as long as its the PCI version.

They aren't missing anything, except their merchandise, when the buyer later claims it was not received and gets Paypal to do a chargeback even if it was received. That's why US sellers won't ship overseas, there are too many scammers.

These are not my videos, but I have two VL Bus motherboards with PR90 chips and one PCI motherboard without a CPU on it at the moment.

If you want something really rare, though, try finding an nx686. There are some early release copies out there that were sold before the AMD buyout that have been documented. I haven't counted more than 4 people claiming to own one, though. They probably weren't on the market for more than a few weeks before production was halted. There are also prototype nx586 motherboards with the nx587 socket and prototype nx587 chips that were never released to the public, and again, I haven't seen more than a handful of people claiming ownership of one of those, either.
