does the plastic shroud need to be on the CPU card or will
the heat sink and fan provide satisfactory cooling for testing and setup.
this board is in so-so shape. one of the retainers looks broken, its only half the
size as the one that looks ok.
i want to test it out before buying replacement parts.

You shouldnt need any kind of shroud as long as you have an active fan

You also dont *need* retainer clips, at least for bench tests. Its not like it holds the CPU down or something

You can do without the shroud if the heatsink is large enough. If the CPU has a tiny heatsink on it, you should keep an eye on the temperatures. The early PII heatsinks Intel used had ridiculously tiny fins and needed the shroud to properly cool the CPU by directing airflow over all of the fin stack.

As for the guides, you can do without them for testing, just avoid bumping the board or the table it's on while it's running, else it may crash or exhibit other erratic behavior.

thanks for your suggestions.
i ordered a new fan and heat sink assembly.
retainers are on the list for the next order
