Backup Powerbook 165

Hi all,

I just recently picked up a powerbook 165 so that I can run Linux on it.
But I want to backup the old MacOS first. Is there an easy way of making
a backup of the hard drive?

Could I use the serial port for instance? Or is the SCSI port the best
way? SCSI cables are hard to come by these days.

I have a harder time finding old Mac serial cables, and both the HDI30 and other SCSI cables have been easier for me to come by. When I get old Macs, I copy the disk to a really big SCSI drive (I think its a 2GB drive partitioned to several 500MB partitions, using silverlining - I haven't added one for a bit, so I don't remember the exact partition size). Its perfect for the smaller size e.g. 40,80, 160MB drives that usually were in the older Macs. A while back, I backed the external drive up by hooking it up to my MDD via SCSI card and burning the drive's contents to a couple of CD's.

I guess when you say, "I copy the disk", you're just copying and pasting files/folders from one disk to the other?
After looking at contents of my PB165 it looks like the previous owner re-installed and installed some apps and some games.
So I'll probably buy the SCSI HDI30 cable and hook it up to a Zip disk that I have and copy files over.

After picking up an old IBM computer I managed to use LapLink through a null-modem cable to transfer all the files off the
drive. It was so simple I was hoping that the Mac would have something similar.
 
You're welcome, but in breaking news, someone posted about serial transfer for old macs at 68kmla today. If you have an account over there, you can view the details in the post and download the related software to see if that is more like what you are looking for.
