It's still possible to relive your Atari BBSing youth today. There is a community of Atari BBS hobbyists that are preserving the charm of early Cyberspace (pre-World Wide Web) that you can still experience today. These BBSs can be connected through a telnet Internet connection. Some also support dial-up for those wanting to really relive the charm of Classic BBSing. There are a variety of ways to connect. Some solutions are as simple as using a term program, like Syncterm, on a modern computer and others use WIFI adapters on Atari 8/16 bit computers (such as the Fujinet or Wimodem232). Earlier this year, Muffinterm, a a classic BBS term program for IOS, added ATASCII support! So, you can connect to an Atari BBS in its native ATASCII mode on your Iphone, Ipad, or Mac (see attached image). Connection options are discussed here. A list of Atari BBSs is available here. Want to know if a BBS is up before you try to connect to it? Then check the Atari BBS Status page.
