Can Windows 2.04 run with MS-DOS 6.22 ?

I'm tryin gto get Windows 2.04 to run correctly on my Compaq Portable. It currently boots MS-DOS 6.22. On Windows Startup (1.0x or 2.04) I get garbage characters with beeps after seeing the Microsoft Logo.
Windows 2.04 will load after this, but I am unable to load PAINT.EXE or WRITE.EXE. No error message though and it freeze there.

I'm thinking this could be caused by MS-DOS 6.22 as I can see in the garbage on the startup script "Incorrect DOS version" spread between the chars.

At the very least, you will need to load SETVER and fool Windows into thinking its running on an earlier DOS version.
