CDR brands that work with early CDROMs

I have a Sony CDU535-01 that I recently recapped. It works great. It can't read the CDRs I've put into it, but I've been informed that it can indeed read CDRs, it's just picky about which brand/type it can read. I've been a Verbatim fan since the late 90s or so, so that's the first brand I tried. When that didn't work I bought some JVC Taiyo Yuden ones, going off of a tip, and those didn't work either.

I know the correct answer is to just buy another CDROM and be done with it. But I'm too much of a nostalgic nerd to do that :)

Which brands do you think will work in the Sony CDU535-01?

I had the same problem in the early days and I solved it by obtaining a newer CDROM. Is there a good reason to hang on that one? I can understand if you have a PC from that era but then you should accept the consequences.

You may be able to adjust the drive's laser power slightly so it can read CD-Rs. I've done that a few times. There is usually an internal pot.

Also make sure you are burning the CD-Rs in a format that is compatible with the OS. For DOS and early Windows that means disc-at-once and ISO 9660 / Joliet. You may also have better success at slower speeds like 4x.
