Commodore 64- constant high pitched tone

I recently got my first Commodore 64 off eBay. Programs work, games play, etc. One extremely annoying problem though: any time I play a game or program that uses sound there is a constant high pitched tone. It's so bad that I have to completely turn down the sound on the TV. Any ideas on what could be causing it or how to fix it?

Replace the 6581 SID chip.

I have 2 in stock that are tested and good to go but haven't been listed on my website yet. I get $16.99 ea plus shipping. PM me if you are interested.

Only other source would be a boneyard C64 that you can pull one from. You can't get them new any more.

I have another 40+ that I have to test... it's just a matter of finding time, which can be tough.
