Commodore 65 on EBAY...

Haha, this auction gets advertised on EVERY forum I visit. Indeed it is a rare item, which also means only a few people will afford it. The latest known C65 sold earlier this year for anything around 5000-7000 Euros, I can't remember or look up the exact figure. So $3000 would be half the price, a bit of a bargain.
 
How many of these are out there? It seems like I've seen at least 4 in the last 5 years. Last one I think went for around $8000 US.
 
This and the TI-99/8 are probably at the top of my list along with a Mattel Keyboard Component for systems I would love to have but will likely never own... "Super" 8-bits (system classes) are particular favorites of mine, and naturally only a handful were ever released to market.
 
You have to be a bit of a hard core collector to shell out that kind of money for a system that is unusable or non functional (most c65 were not complete and working).
 
If I *had* that kind of money I'd sooner shell it out for an extremely-limited-number-in-existence Commodore 64 descendant than things that normal people like such as: cars, food, furniture, whatever those people enjoy..

I've actually had the gall to search around to buy one of these, but after now knowing how much they go for, I think I'll just stop until I find myself with too much money some day (I hope).

I think the general consensus is about 50 known systems. Some collectors own multiple, there is a guy in Italy who scored about ten C65's back in the 1990's when they were still affordable. Oh yes, some 15 years ago they could be had for less than 1/10th of what collectors today pay. On the other hand that could probably be said for all rare vintage computers.
 
just to let you know: I know the seller personally... the C65 originally belongs to another collector and not to MacXL .. I know both of them.. they are the biggest collectors here in Austria (together with me ;-)))
 
I wish I had had the foresight to order one of these from Software Hut back when they ended up with a stack of them after the Commodore Liquidation. I'd wager that's where most people bought them in NA.

Who says you would not have given one away or junked it in a move or spring cleaning since 1993-4 and felt even worse letting it go through your fingers?

You need quite a bit of cash , space, and time if you want to speculate on something being worth quite a bit of money down the road as a collectable, especially when it is worthless "junk" at the time it is available. 99.99% of what you hoard will still be junk in 15+ years down the road and the few items that are worth money will probably not offset the time, money, and effort needed to preserve all the rest.

There probably isn't a long term collector in this forum that hasn't picked up a few items for little money that ended up being worth quite a bit more down the road. There are also people here that did pick up early 70's machines (or earlier) that are pretty rare but are not popular and are worth little today.

I'm not much of a collector anymore, so you're probably right. I'll collect things short term, play with them for a bit, and then sell them off or trade them in order to make room for something different to play around with. However, even if that was the case, I could at least have physically put my hands on one then, which is probably something I'll never be able to do now given the price of the things. :)
